Ok here is my entry for the “Spectacular” challenge, the story involves a boy and a dragon and has an oriental theme. Am finding it hard to settle on an exact theme for the picture, one branch involves a small dragon in a glass jar and the second involves the boy fishing the dragon out of the water. Both ideas have their conceptual flaws and I am finding it hard to settle on an exact theme or image but these are early days and I have still to decide on a final image. My lovely girlfriend attempted to visualise this image and gave me this pic, I think it has the find of feeling that I am going for, even though the final pic will be a bit more styalised I think. Will post it when I figure out how to post images!
Hello,
I noticed you were a bit low on replies - so well here i am
Quite honestly your sketch is 100 times better than my miserable attempt, so i wish i could give you some advice to help you, but truth is i can’t.
Nature scenes hold a particularly special feel for me as i spend a lot of time in nature. Some of my greatest inspiration comes directly from plants, animals, the sun and all the things that are out there - free for all to see, unique each day and never dull. Your scene is gonna be combining water, plants, open sky sunlight (guessing at that one), so its technically gonna be quite a challenge to put it all together - but if you can draw like this you can probably model and render very well also, so i’ll just check you out as you go along
I like to see the methods other artists use to create foliage, grass, plants and other 3D stuff - if i could give you a tip for the grass (actually having done it a short while ago) use cinema 4D’s matrix extrude on a heavily subdivided plane, even with some rough settings i was able to produce some nice realistic grass, if you dont have cinema 4D - well, i’m sure other software have a similar tool, but i cant think of a name as Blender and C4D are all i use.
I wish you MANY MANY free hours to work on your submission, because hard work and determination is the only tried and tested path to success.
Anyways, i’m blabbering - BTW, did you use photoshop to draw the sketch??? How can you draw so accurately with a mouse - or did you use a pad???
Trying to decide on the type of dragon for the image. I think I will go for a Chinese style of dragon as it fits the picture a little better.
Thank you DK3D, that is some useful advice, I might try that grass trick. I can do a similar thing in lightwave with magic bevel. I gotta do more work for this, gonna start on the dragon soon.
