Spectacular 3D Entry: Shane Purcell

#1

Shane Purcell is entered in the “Spectacular Challenge” update: View Challenge Page

Latest Update: Texturing: More modelling and initial texturing

#2

This is an initial sketch for my challenge. Its going to be a recreation so to speak of the D-Day invasion on one of the beaches in france.

Im hoping the scope of the image will tell the story of “Spectacular.”

Forgive the primitive sketch

#3

Good luck:thumbsup: . Hope you get to finish this one.

#4

That would be a pretty tight image! I can picture it and the sketch does the trick. I can see what you’re going for. Maybe you can rent Saving Private Ryan and Troy to get some images of massive numbers of boats approaching in war formation. Good luck with this.

#5

Some initial blocking so to get proper scale.

Good luck to everyone!

#6

Initial modelling of Higgins Boat. Since the camera will never be particularly close to them, this will probably be as poly detailed as they will get. Most of the remaining detail will be created by texture.

#7

Heres some more modelling and some initial texturing. Will prolly call it done soon and move on to other elements.

Great model of the landing craft. Though if you stick to your original concept, we won’t see much of it model in the final image. I think it would be more spectacular if you placed the camera on one of the ships of the allied task force. You could show the escort cruisers and destroyers firing salvoes supporting the beachhead. There’s nothing more spectacular than a warship firing all it’s cannons. If you do not believe me, just search for “BB Iowa” in Google Images, and see what I’m talking about. Also, an allied ship’s model is much more impressive then a german gun turret’s back, and some tank traps in the distance. Just my humble opinion.

thanks for the reply. If I were going for essentially the view of/from one ship, then Id agree with you. The point of the image though is the spectacle of the entire armada coming to bear on the beaches of normandy. That I think is more spectacular then the view from one ship. I get your point though.

How did you make that water? It looks almost like a photo… is it?

#11

Hey good idea, truly spectacular event. Locked in…

#12

no its no photo  Its just a greenish material with some reflectance. i might have to use some photos for the surf where it hits the beach. we’ll see

thanks for all the comments.

Man, you really pulled off the water look great! I wish I knew how you did that hint cough But I’m sure you wouldn’t want to give away your secrets until after the challenge is over… Keep it up. I love the mood that I can foresee in this scene.

Have you considered what you will be doing for the sky (ie dark and cloudy or sunny and blue?)

#14

Very nice modeling and texturing. Like the look allot. Plus it’s one of my favourite themes from movies

Nice work and good luck to you

#15

there really is no secret to the water. at this point there isn’t even any refraction. Its just a greenish diffuse with fresnel reflections. And a blue sky to reflect.

Have you considered what you will be doing for the sky (ie dark and cloudy or sunny and blue?)

good question. My current thought is to go with whatever weather was occuring on that date. Which Im assuming was mostly cloudy. Might have a weak sun to give some better shadows though.
