Latest Update: Concept Sketch: The way is up

The way is up, whatever the future may bring, the best i can think of is the space elevator, no more rockets to carry us just above the atmosphere but a smooth ride into space.

But why not keep the rockets, those who ride on rails like the Shinkansen 500 who at 400 meters lenght and a weight of about 800 ton thunder through the Japanese landscape at speed of over 300 km an hour.

Imagine a train, it has just cleared the atmosphere in about a half an hour, it will now accelerate to 3000 km per hour and once i has done that the passengers will be in free fall for the next 10 hours with nothing much more to do than to gaze out of the window before they arrive at the geo-stationary station.

What a trip that would be.

Note: Picture is not mine, but it gives an idea.

A first sketch of my idea for a spectacular future, trains riding along the space-elevator.

In the foreground you will have the fast shinkansen look alike train racing upwards and overtaking a slower freighttrain (wich will most likely a bit blurred), details of the orbital tower, basically it will still be some kind of cable made out of handwavium with a structure around it, any that’s the action, the foreground

Deep below and in the background you will have a cityscape fanning out from the tower, a port of trade, a port of call, earth central, next stop is space.
