Ok, time to throw my hat in to this comp.

Concept:
Some time in the future, a militant detonates a ‘dirty’ bomb in the city. The entire population is either killed or evacuated, not to return till the contamination reaches safe levels.

Over the years, nature takes over. The city becomes a literal ‘concrete jungle’. Freeways become grassy plains. Buildings become climbing frames for creepers and trees. Birds fill the skies and treat the cities’ skyscrapers as their natural nesting-grounds.

The image represents the spectacular shot taken from the viewpoint of the first human to return to the city-centre… a testament to the fragility of our existence, and to the power of nature.

More coming soon

Ok, for some inspiration, here’s some images of the temples in cambodia that have been absorbed into the jungle.

Imagine this kind of thing, but in the context of a modern city.

This seems to be an interesting concept. I’m curious what you will make of it. Good luck!

I like the idea a lot, and I’m sure it could result in some spectacular nature/architecture combinations - also makes me think of the movie “Twelve monkeys” that used some environments like that… very cool, so I’m looking forward to see what happens next

This can turn out really cool! Original.

Thanks all for the support

Shame I can’t embed Bob Marley’s ‘Concrete jungle’ onto this thread for full effect! (one of my favourite tunes of all time)

I think I’m going to take some time working out a good composition. The key things I want are good foreground detail, and a dramatic vista down the street.

The image also needs something poignant I feel… a human element… or something to add depth to the story.

Some ideas so far…
[ul]
[li]A character in a bubble bio-suit… [/li][li]A face emerging from some shadows… a survivor… [/li][li]a bus-stop with some bags/cases as if left in a panic many years ago. [/li][li]Some monkeys waiting at a bus stop, for a bus that never comes… sad/comical at the same time. The visitor catches this apparent comedy act on film… but its just a lucky shot. [/li][/ul]That last idea could lead on to better things I think… the possibilies of placing animals in humanist situations would be something that gives the image a ‘caught in the spur of the moment’ element that I think it needs. … others could be money in a ruined car… apparently driving it… or … monkey walking past with a briefcase… like someone on their way to work…

hmmmm…

JamesMK - yea… I think I need to watch that film again to see if there is anything to take inspiration from. I think this image will be less of the dark-side of twelve monkeys, and more in the style of a 1950’s arch illustration… fantastical and awe inspiring with warm colours.
… but then again, I may be drawn into the darkside

hey pat, looking very nice.

another source of reference material could be akira. the bit towards the end where tetsuo starts to loose control and becomes a mechanical throbbing tumor. lots of pseudo vine growth there, albeit cables and wires but you might get something in the structure of the growth.

That’s right discochimp… I had been thinking of that…
hmmm… that would make a nice alternative subject actually… a city overrun by organo-mechanic tubing and wiring…

But for this, I’m going to keep with the organic approach.

#12

Nice concept… this can be a great project

Good luck!!

An early attempt at setting up a composition. To maximise the drama of the image, I intend to have a strong story telling element in the foreground (the bus-stop and building foyer), a dramatic cityscape, and a beautiful vista.
One thing I am not sure of, is whether to go for realism in terms of camera lens…or to depict the image as though it is recalled from the memory of the person that witnessed the view.

#14

An alternative composition of the scene, giving more prominance to the foreground… and the start of how the vegetation might be incorporated.

#15

Hi Patrick,

Your concept is really interesting and I like your compositions of the scene, they are both strong. I think I like the landscape layout better than the portrait one. Good luck with this.

#16

Good luck mate
nice idea:)
