Spectacular 3D Entry: jason butler
oh boy, another challenge i won’t finish.
but i had a few images flash in my head when reading the guidelines, so we’ll see.
Concept 1: “Insurgent”
this is a direct reference to the iconic (and horrifying) images of the student standing up to the tank in tiananmen square, and the execution of a viet cong guerrila in saigon.
the idea here is to show a futuristic armed force facing off with a rebel freedom fighter and to show an image that would be enough to change public perception of a conflict.
Very nice situation, you could play with the people shadow, it add a lot of sensation to your image…
Good luck mate
Nice idea. I think you could play off emotions a lot as well. The rebel looking like he has been beat or even dignified to the end. The soldier being the representation of tyranny. Keep going!
those are some powerful photos hope you can capture the feeling in your image. also your sketch reminded me of fallout 1’s intro the part about when the usa anexed canada and one of the guys executes some one in the street and then waves at the camera. not that was spectacular… errr in a weird way.
Oh very cool concept. I love it. It reminds me of the ending for 24 (I think season 3 or something) where Jack Bauer executed Mason
Very cool idea and sketch.

thanks for all the feedback on the concept guys. the hard part on this one is going to be giving it the emotional punch needed as, technically speaking, there probably won’t be anything mindblowing here. the mood, lighting, and camera is going to have to sell it.
i thought briefly of a few other concepts, but i like this one the best i think. i’ll try to get some refined concept images up in the next day or two.
heh., I felt the same, Not sure if I could finish a challenge finally, but this one i’m pretty confident i will.
good luck mate
When seeing just the thumbnail at first, this strikes me as a VERY good composition - carry on!
well, i’m terrible at sketching structures, so i just started modeling some rough buildings and elements for the background.
i’m trying to set up the composition of the scene the best i can now so i avoid modeling and texturing a bunch of buildings and props that might not even make it into the final scene.
i’ve got two options here. i prefer the first one, myself? what do you guys think?
hi flinder
the surrounding environment and the characters poses seems fine! but i say bring in the character closer so we can see the emotions and suspense! and maybe the angle could like watching over them!
nice and cool concept.
cheers!
I think the first one is a more interesting composition but I agree that the characters should be closer to the camera, specially if it is from a journalist POV.
One more thing… to be honest the character design doesn’t quite match the type of environment you are making… maybe it looks way too advanced with that mask… I love the concept sketch but I suggest coming up with a couple more concepts before moving on to modeling.
agreed on all points. the disconnect between the soldier and the plain-jane street is something that i’ve been thinking about. i plan on adding a few “hero” buildings to the foreground, and a slightly more futuristic skyline in the background to reinforce the fact that this is set in the future.
i want the street these two characters are inhabiting to be sort of an older, forgotten back alley. i’d also like to have several government propaganda posters and rebel graffiti around the scene to kind of push the dystopian future thing.
i definitely will work on the viewpoint, though. i think i need to get my buildings modeled before i can decide what to do with it.
