Spectacular 3D Entry: James Kaufeldt

#421

Hi James,
Great progress and impressive work! I see you finaly decided to put on some wings. That looks much more convincing.

do you consider to set the left wing-side on fire? regarding the composition it would fit very well there.

monks - The plane dynamics is a big issue… and right now I don’t have any clear solutions, but I’m sort of half-thinking about it while working on the other parts. I agree it has to be solved somehow before the final render at any rate. Thanks for your thoughts!

Divaise - Thanks, and good luck yourself

makaron - Smörigt! Och det är inte ens fredag ännu

cocoknight - Yeah, that left bend doesn’t necessarily make sense… Anyways, well, I imagine the wing falls off upon the initial impact, i.e. when the plane hits the top of the bridge tower… after that it’s all downhill

Dimitris - Yoinks! Not sure if there’s room for more zoom, problem is to combine what is a middle-of-the-action shot with an establishing shot… it’s a bit of both here I guess… “ZOOM” gives me an idea though for how to solve the plane’s motion-dynamics… dirty tricks… Will make experiments later.

Goul - Thanks, there’s more deformations coming… I’m just warming up

Fahrija - Wings are great to have on airplanes! I’ll think about the fire… right now I plan to have that part of the image rather empty, but I might change my mind later.

Jaba153, SONIC-X, Gus Clifton, cipher, jmturbo, Grigorij, Rock Lee, madshooter - Thanks guys!

Daaaammmnnn - this is looking sweeeet! The buckling of the bridge, combined with the crumpling plane give this a tremendous sense of mass and impact. Should look awesome with the explosions and sparks. Any ideas on how youre gonna do that?

Im not too keen on the positioning of the tail section though - it seems to look too ‘posed’ and it makes too much sense given that it is crashing. Twist it a bit, or break bits off.

Keep up the aceness - this is probably my fave 3d entry so far

its friday… :bounce: så jag får smöra idag…
I can say that your image is progressing niiiiice… L
but where is the bubbling soured milk?

#433

Andy - Hmm, I see what you mean about the tail… It’s a tricky bit though, because it also serves as an iconic element in that it helps to make this instantly identifiable as a plane rather than a random pile of scrap metal… but I fully agree about the sense of it being a bit deliberately posed too. I might simply destroy it a little bit more, to make it more of a random accident, but not too much so that it is no longer identifiable - how’zat?

Thank you very much for those crits! I can’t touch your granny though

makaron - Sheesh… I skipped the whole sourmilk/aspirin experiment… but I’ve painted some textures instead… update soonish.

Made a texture for the bridge road. Basically a composite of around 10 different photos, lots of copying and pasting, cloning, cleaning and blending.

Since I plan to render the final at 4K resolution, and because the road actually fills the entire width at the very bottom of the image, I’ve played it safe and made a 4K texture to avoid any pixelation.

#435

There’s a render coming up too, but I played around with the render parameters a bit too much, so it’s taking forever to finish…

Soonish :scream:

#436

LOL

#437

4000 square… you think that will be sufficient ? :scream: hahaha

but you’re right… textures at the border don’t forgive…

That’s appear very realistic, and very scraping… practical to slow down the plane in a shower of sparks :bounce:

Always some good jobs here

#438

The road texture applied. I’ve also added a wave effect to the bridge (a bit exaggerated, but I think it might be good not to be too subtle here) using a combination of wind and bulge deformers and a fair bit of manual relignments.

Also messed up the secondary suspension wires a bit, and added small metal things where the road modules should normally be aligned edge-to-edge.

Bitchin! This is looking stunning! I really feel the plane coming to get me…i’ll be watchin this closely.

cheers::bc

I agree with Andy - get some stuff flying through the air! Remember this thing has ploughed into this bridge at 400-odd km/h - bits will be breaking off left right and centre. I get a real sense of impact and weight from the image (Great!), but I really want to see more of the speed of the impact. As Andy suggested, maybe the tail could fly around on angle more perpendicular to the camera…I’d love to see the missing part of the right-hand wing in the air (in that empty space in the top left sector of the image (maybe with an engine still attached…) Great job so far, I reckon the explosions etc will really help sell the impact of this great image…
