Spectacular 2D Entry: Yigit Savtur
Finally i have found the subject and the compositon in my head which defines spectacular for me… I will explain the concept and the story…
The name creation of Adam is a concept used by the basic (3) religions (Jewism,Christianity and Islam) Im not a Man of Religion or an expert on the subject But i have read the text in Qur’an (Holy book of Islam) which tells us that Adam (the first man) was created by Allmighthy God to show the power he holds over all creation…This man would obey His commands and wishes as would any of His creations but “Mankind” would have “free will” a right to make choices… God commands the angels to bow before his creation “the man”…All obey and bow except Satan…"claiming he is created from fire and that he will not bow a lower being mad of mud (dirt or soil)…So he is cursed by God and is a fallen angel (demon)… This explaination always touched me in some way and always made me wonder how adam was created…
One day while i was surfing on the net i came upon this story written by Jalal ad-Din Muhammad Rumi (Mevlana or Mawlana) a man of Islam , theology, poetry and Sufism…The story was on the 5 th Book of Masnavi (Masnavi-l Ma’navi)
You can Find more info here---->http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Masnavi
The story is basicly like this…
The name of the story was "The Obedience of the Angel of Death "
The story told that ,God sends angel Gabriel to collect a handfull of Mud from earth which will form the body of man…Gabriel goes to Earth but earth rejects Gabriels demands claiming Her love to God is superior than the existence of man and after man is created it will disobey God…Resulting in Gods Wrath which will also effect Earth where man will live… Gabriel returns empty handed…God sends Raphael (İsrafil) and Michael (Mikail) but they also return empty handed…Then lastly God sends Azrael… When Earth rejects Azrael says he is the spear in gods hand and will not listen to objections or refusals; because God’s commands are superior over anything… So he retireves to mud and brings it back to God…And God rewards Azrael with the honor of collecting their souls after their deaths…
After i read the story i was quite effected by Azrael and the story (Although it put some question marks in the head, it was just a story it didnt claimed to be tue or Holy… so it was interesting for me… Later searching for more i found this depiction of the angel Azrael (Angel of Death)
"Azrail, Ashriel, Azaril, and Azriel. The name literally means whom God helps.
He is generally depicted as an archangel under the command of God and usually not in a fashion similar to those associated with darker incarnations of death personified. Depending on the outlook and precepts of various religions in which he is a figure, Azrael is portrayed as residing in the third Heaven, possessing 70,000 feet and 4,000 wings, having as many eyes and tongues as there are men in the world, and recording and erasing constantly in a large book the names of men at birth and death, respectively. [Rf: Hastings, Encyclopaedia of Religion and Ethics IV, 617]"
I was really blown away by the thought of such a creature (Angel)…So when i read all this I thought it would be great if i could depict this in a Compositon… So I start today…
But claiming a handfull of earth couldnt be so hard… so i had to find another object to create the tension in the story…This came again from the Religious and Islamic concept of Jinn. (genies)…According to Islam they are creations made of smokeless fire…And are neither good nor evil…But they do some wicked things and evil things but some are good… So i m planning to portrey the Jinn as the claimers of Earth…People who think they own earth…By not giving Azrael a handfull…
This Sketch is nothing more than a pre-sketch a materialization of idea… so it is not the reflection of what im planning its just a starter to give the idea…
Okay as you have (hope u did) read my entry explaination Azrael is a very very very hard creature to depict or even imagine… I dont have to obey to explainations or ideas abouts Azrael because it is something not known… But this is CG Forums Challenge so let be get into the challenge!!!
This was the explaination i found on Wikipedia…This Concept design uses this explanation as model structure…

That looks great. It’s certainly going to be stunning once you get to coloring is… Have fun coloring all them eyes!
Just an idea, but maybe making the “tail” longer would make it feel larger and more imposing. Just a thought… Good luck on it!

Thank you all… Designing the Angel is the most hardest part in this challenge…I will come up with some other designs and see if the’ll work…better…
The Islamic information is both new and educational to me…I always like that. I agree that is a rather spectacular concept…
What a monster creature!!! Wow, very imaginative.
Best of luck with the contest!
Okay the veins really took some time but im happy how it came out… This piece is a A3 handmade drawing.Technical Pencil (0,35-HB)…
For years i hated the “bird wing” consept of angels and “bat wing” consept of demons so here is a different approach… the biggest wing on the right is a dragonfly wing…The rest of the wings dont have a specific wing type but they are all based on insect wings…
As yi have said before the explaination on how Azrael looks like says he has “4000 wings” the need for this much wings ia un certain. As far as i know dragon flies are the only being i saw which has more than 2 wings… So instead of filling necessary space with un used and pointless number of wings i decided to make 4 wings consisting of 7 small wings…each flapping in sequence to the other this way if such a thing existed we would be seeing reflections of light from the 7 small wings multiplied by the movement of the bigger wings (arms)…I hope I explained it correctly… Its just pointless to draw 4000 wings… how are they going to flap ???..
The arms structure (mother wing) is made of muscle inside with bone on the outside… yes its bone. Its bone because since the Basic religions or myths azraell was portrayed with a caped skeleton with a sychte in hand… I want to change and get over this idea but i thought i have to find a mid way between the old iconization and my own iconization… so making an bone outer skeleton might make it look more similiar to the “grim reaper” everybodys so fond of… If your thinking how am i going to make the head with all those eyes…well we’ll see wont we…
NO reference used (for nothing)…
That’s really amazing. Have you ever done the illustrations of any biology book or something like that?
I know this took a while but the symetry was a pain in th *ss so at last here it is.The skull on the far left is a model for the whole “grim reaper” concept…
This skeleton “grim reaper” chracter is a old personnification of death from begining of civilization until this day…
This following text is from wikipedia (death pesonification-as chracter)…
“The character of Death is typically depicted in the West as wearing a dark hooded cloak and wielding a scythe. Death is one of the four horsemen of the Apocalypse. In many icons of the resurrection of Jesus, death is portrayed as an almost naked man who is bound hand and foot lying amid the bones under the earth. In Eastern Orthodox theology, death is one of humanity’s three enemies; the other two are sin and the devil. This figure of Death is also known as the Grim Reaper. Death, in this guise, appears also on one of the Tarot arcana. While in Germanic folklore, including English, Death is male (der Tod), in Latin folklore it is female (la muerte, la mort). In Mexico, death is sometimes referred upon as La Calaca, a skull like character that comes and takes people away when they die.”
I have come to understand that people do not think a creature as “death” if it does not have a sycthe in his hand, or has a skull face,or wears a black robe… So i decided to use the “skully face” for deaths identification… So to make things clear this is not a “monster” or “grim reaper” or “alien” this is my personification of death…
