Spectacular 2D Entry: Don Bickley
deeep breath! Alright, I have committed
This is going to be my first challenge so I’m kind of intimidated by the whole process, but I’ve got to learn and what better way than to go all out?
I’ve had this idea the second I heard the theme for this challenge, and I’ve finally gotten access to a waucom so I can sketch and skribble and paint my way through it. The idea is that you’re a white mouse looking out across this vast concrete and steal construct that just dominates everything and blows your mind.
I’m not sure if the current view really captures that mood, so I’ll be messing around with various setups and posting the sketches here in the next few days
The only experience I have coming into this project is that I can use oil paints, so it’s going to be quite a trip
Thanks for looking, and any comments or suggestions are greatly appreciated. (I can just hear the evil laughs from all the people whose past threads I’ve commented in lol). I promise the final version will look a lot better than this sketch ;D
Concept 2. I rather like this one as I think it captures a sense of scale better. Only thing I need to adjust is the perspective lines for the bottom left to give the buildings a better sense of height. Once I’ve worked out the final placement of the main pieces, I’ll start working on buildings. Current ones in place now are simply for reference.
Hey Don,
Welcome to the challenge, Im new to painting myself.
I wanted to offer a suggestion, because my first concept had some of the same troubles I think yours will have, and that is creating a sense of depth. Your sketch succeeds more than my first concept in the immediate foreground with that huge chain like structure moving into the middle ground. I think where you should think about your design is in the background. It is a real challenge to convey a sense of size when you basically have a simple layer sitting behind another layer, without any intervening objects(like the chain) to show how far away it is.
Good luck,
