Hey Charles,
I’m a graduate from the DAVE school, graduated in September 2014, let me give you some info about me before I give you my input.
My name is Daniel Lopez de Medrano, I graduated from high school in 2013, later in September of 2013 I began to attend DAVE School, right from the start your daughter is going to see the amount of work she’s going to be asked to do, it’ll sound ridiculous at that moment, but as weeks go by, more is expected from you, they train you just like a studio experience, deadlines have to be met & also requirements for it to be passed down the pipeline.
This system will be implemented throughout the entire year there, deadlines, requirements & a lot of learning. Honestly, I prefer a year of learning what I actually love to do rather than 4 years of learning what I love to do & also pointless things that I don’t really care for. Problem with 4 years is programs get old real quick & they don’t update frequently at those schools, DAVE School you’ll be fresh & using programs they actually use in studios which is a HUGE benefit.
Back to me graduating in September, the last 3 months students of block 4 for VFX are asked to make a short film with their classmates, the school has the storyboard, character concepts & scripts down, now what you need to is all the digital work (the hard stuff haha), I worked hard those 3 months, not because of deadlines or what not, but because I genuinely loved the vibe of working as a team to get this amazing short film done, I was the student that was interested in “rigging”, which is basically the person who adds the skeleton, controls, deformations, etc… for the animators to be able to even move a character, prop, vehicle or even environment.
About 6-8 weeks prior to graduation, our Academic Director “William Vaughan” called me in his office to give me my report on how my grades were doing, he does this about every so often weeks to talk to all the students & to see how they can bring their grades up if they’re failing. Everyone is called in regardless though no matter their grade, so I go in, close the door, sit down & I’m waiting for him to ask me the usual questions about my grades, he instead looked at me & said, “hey Daniel, I might have found you a job!”. I was worried though because all I wanted to do was rigging & focus on that, he then told me it involved just rigging, then I was worried because I didn’t want to move since I’m still 19 & live with my dad, he then told me the job is actually in Florida! That moment, that very moment would be a memory I’ll never forget, the happiness I had was insane!! He told me to contact the owner & introduce myself.
I called the guy, the call went pretty much like this, “Hey, this is Daniel, right? I heard you’re the rigger to go to, why don’t you come down here to Sarasota to show you the studio & what we’re about here?”, of course I said awesome & went there the next day, he showed me around, showed me the team. Then he told me to show my demo reel which is a video compilation of the work you do, but he told me to show it to him & the entire team, I was nervous, it started playing & all of their faces were so amazed, they were looking at my work & saying “that’s crazy!”, that’s amazing!!", best feeling ever I swear. Did my interview with him, talked about when I could start.
6 weeks prior to graduating I already had a secure job, exactly what I love to do & didn’t have to move to some other state. The youngest in my class & already was starting my career, I started working on the 25th of September, the day after graduating from DAVE School. Yesterday was 4 months at my studio, still rigging, doing what I love, becoming a better artist as days pass by. Remember in the beginning how I was talking about the crazy projects at DAVE school that you found to be crazy, now I look back to those & laugh at how simple they truly were.
Does DAVE School prepare you for the industry? Yes
Does DAVE School help you find that first job? Yes
Is DAVE School the smartest decision I’ve made in my life? Pretty much!
Thanks to them I started my career at age 19, I’ll forever be grateful to them. Below I can post links to my 4th block project I worked on, my demo reel & my LinkedIn. You’ll definitely love the school & so will your daughter once you two go to the tour during the Summer, if you have any questions just let me know Charles & sorry for how long this got, haha.
