So how's 10.5 at importing previous AM stuff?

#1

Does it handle full on projects at all? Or only simple models without textures? What?

Anyone tried it out for this yet? I’d be very curious to hear about it’s varying degrees of success/failure at being able to update older projects we’re working on.

Thanks!

Peter,
Think of 10.5 as 10 with the new features. It can do everything that 10 can, almost as reliably plus you can see your stuff in multipass. I’ve not experienced anything in 10.5 where it leaves out materials or decals or anything like that. I’m on a pc, by the way.

I’ve not actually tried bringing in an 8.5 prj though.

Yes, forgot to mention I’m interested in the PC version.

Well, if it can bring in models fully textured with poses, and perhaps bring in Actions that would pretty good. Loading a full blown PRJ would be best, however.

Well, maybe by the end of the year, I’ll purchase the latest version and give it a spin.

only thing I’d be careful off is making sure any poses don’t repeat each other - to explain:wavey:
the ikjoe model I backwards modified for 8 and 8.5 had constraints poses that operate separately. I could and have opened copies of the file in 9.5 without hitch. Only thing I had to be careful of was that poses in 8.5 worked separate. In 9.5 I could easily overload and get unpredictable results.

Oh dear - let me try that again - any constraint could accidentaly be set up twice rather than once when 8.5 poses turn into 9 and up relationships.

Got ya.

Funny thing is I don’t use constraint poses. Found them too troublesome anyway- I prefer constraint actions. Probably what you’re saying applies there as well, as it seems to be the constraint set up that is the issue, not the pose or action part.

Good to know that they work well enough. This will help a lot in some months’ time.

I’ve imported some models from v8.5l with textures to both 10n and 10.5a. There were no poses, bones or materials…just geometry and textures. I had to do some minor fixing to get one model to work properly with the new porcelain material (had to break and rebuild a few 5 point patches as they rendered wrong).

Interestingly enough, I was actually able to open a model saved in 10n, with 8.5l.

Are there any known side effects or things to avoid when importing from 8.5, that will stab me in the back later?

I have full projects sets/props/characters with animation/ lights/ materials/decals etc all importing fine.

You have to watch out for some of the plug in materials like those from toonnation as they have combined the multi-version plugins and when your material looks for say Weave2 it won’t find it.

9.5 had some problems with choreographies and materials but 10.5 is pretty painless.
