snake

hi, what do you think of this snake? I’ve been looking at it for too long :surprised

He’s moving real fast, and real steadily. This is the best reference I can come up with with like 5 minutes

both these guys move in little tiny bursts, and I’m not sure how exact the rest of their body follows the part infront of it. in yours it looks like you have a mesh moving along a curve? If so the whole thing will follow the curve to a “T”.

Hey it’s looking really nice!

I like that it angles up a bit when it curves, but I noticed a slight jitter when the bends go up and down. It contrasts oddly with the smoothness of the snake’s other movement. I can’t really figure it out, unless it’s cos you have a ton of keyframes there or something.

But yeah, looks great!

hey there.

I agree with drew, there is somthing weird going on there with the render. As for the animation itself, is not bad at all. Only thing I see wrong is it’s a little too linear and robotic at the moment, I would look at footage of real snakes and study how they move. Apart from that real cool man. Good job.

Hey cheers guys, I started noticing the jitter as well. I found its coming from my terrible setup, where the snake’s spline doesn’t have the resolution to match the path spline, producing a wobble. I’m trying to rebuild it, but it’s fragile

I was using this as reference - trying to emphasise the raised body where he pushes himself along.

Did you by any chance got inspired to create this animation after seeing Nagini in action?

#7

is that harry potter? I haven’t seen it.

Ok, I think I’ve fixed it.

That was a bit of a nightmare, next time I’ll be better prepared. I spent a lot of time cleaning knots out of the path spline, and making changes to the way the path expands and contracts. Really need a better path rig next time, and then I’ll try for some more interesting actions.

I was just about to post the video you were using for reference video, then I saw you already were using it. Haha. I like the newer version you just did, looks almost like the video reference itself. Though upon a little bit closer look at the reference I notice the snakes head is tilted up slightly where yours is just flat on the ground. I just found a bit of video that might actually help you study this movement a tad bit more.

Hope that helps.

Hey Chucky, nice info about the scales and weight  I kind of feel sorry for them when they’ve got the little jackets on them and they can’t move, but pretty interesting!
