Small tutorial about set extension

#1

Hey guys,

Since a lot of people are still wondering what a matte painter really does in a studio, I put up an overview of most basic tasks you would undertake as Junior Matte Painter: cleaning, extending, light enhancement and grading.

This article is very simple and intended for the students and guys who want to begin on this path, so everyone else please don’t take offence

I hope that in the future I will be able to put up some more advanced aspects such as architecture match up and camera projection

Anyway, here’s the link

Let me know if it’s of any use!

hi,
though the tut looks simple, I find it useful;

for people (like me) having just a vague idea of matte-production pipeline (or in other words - of what matte-painter really does in a studio), each piece of info from someone from ā€œinside the industryā€ concerning this kind of topic is pretty valuable …
(personally, I myself have at least thousands other questions coming to my mind each time I come across any matte-painter“s work, actually  )
so - thanks for your little tut(s),
a.

Feel free to ask some of those questions here and I’ll try to answer…maybe other guys will too, I’m sure James will drop by soon

it might be useful to explain ā€œhowā€ you did the things you are talking about…it might be alot more useful that way as it is a very basic tutorial.

also you forgot to cut out inside the wires on the very edge of the right hand buildings…Id say that taking care of little things like that is also important for a basic tutorial because its often those types of things that people might miss out on…

looks good tho.

This looks good. Glad you have started with tuts

… thanks
would be nice to have a chance to have some kind of ā€œconsultingā€ place here, but I am afraid I would have spammed your thread with questions
(so - instead - I“ll try to ask one-by-one, as I go, in separate thread(s) of mine, glad for any possible feedback)

but - just to add - concerning matte-tutorials in general -
what I find most difficult when trying to learn some fundamentals of matte-painting is finding some more matte-specific information on the pipeline/production process, the daily routine of a matte-painter, the way matte-painters collaborate with others in a team, their part in the pipeline, wheather (or to what extent) a matte-painter needs to know also compositing and/or other techniques or packages; what are common mistakes beginners might do - and should avoid - not to make the workflow difficult for other people in the following process, and so ..

in other words - people (incl. me) new to matte-painting, but not to PS (using PS on every-day basis for other different image post-processing tasks) do not actually look for general PS technique kind of "how to use PS Curves", but - instead - would like to know - for example - wheather to apply/or not to apply grading, as this is a compositor“s task (is it???) .. or -
not actually looking for the info on "how to extract objects", but - instead - whether (and why, if so) it is important to keep keyed out objects in separare layers (maybe for a compositor?? or for some other reason?) - or - whether a simple-layered flat final 2D painting is just fine - and what is going to happen to the matte-painting next ...
(sorry, just silly examples comming to my mind right now .. )

I am trying to say - I am not very successful in finding some basic production info, I mean kind of "what" or "why" matte-specific answers, instead of "how", which I am not seeking that much, actually ..

but - that is just me,
since - as Cyberone mentioned - "how" answers are important too,
so - any kind of insight into the matte-techniques might be fine ..

Thx for your tut( which is more a making off

I think what you did is very usefull to many people because it explains very rough what a mattepainter does.
So if anybody asks me" what is a mattepainter doing", i can lead him or her to your website/tuts.

The next step could be, like already mentioned, going more into detail“s.

I would like to see more of it.

Cheers djart73

Cyberone> You have to understand that I did it in a hurry, so small things can still be left out  Also, as alenah said, I don’t think people want to read ā€˜use curves like this, use levels like that’, but rather what they are supposed to do…

However, I will cover more detail and how to-s in the next one, when I will do a real set extension (with greenscreen)

djart> glad to hear that  Yes, I will go into more detail in the next ones
