Slow net render

Hi,

I’m new at MODO and i’m very impressed with its render engine, but one thing that i found strange is net render behaviour. After some tests i found that is much faster rendering a range of frames in each computer than using the integrated net render option. Apparently slave nodes render much slower than master, or communication between them are very slow. I’ve tried changing bucket size having different results but none of them satisfactory. I have a 100mbit LAN and i’ve never had any speed problems.

Also i noticed than sometimes (if not most of the time) CPU use in Multithreading slaves are at 50% what means that are using only one core (i think the other is ‘busy’ sending or receiving data). Automatic multithreading is enabled in slaves and i also tested other number of threads.

It’s a pity that such a smart method isn’t very usable. Unless i’m doing something wrong.

Any suggestions ?

Not using it yet myself, but yeah, it does seem odd that this is happening. I don’t have a solution, but check the MODO forums if you haven’t already done it…there’s some posts in there I recall others having the same issues.

Yeah, you are right, after some investigation i found those threads in Luxology Forum.

There is a nice program called MODOMOJO which gives MODO some kind of ScreamerNet funcionality (Lightwave’s Style). I mean, instead of dealing with buckets, it deals with full frames, what gives a solution to the problem, although is not very ellegant.

The problem with modo’s net render is that it assigns a bunch of buckets, and then doesn’t assign new ones until all of them are done. So if you have an eight-core, it will be rendering at the speed of the slowest of the eight buckets. That means that if a heavy piece of the image is contained wholly within ONE bucket, you’ll see horrible performance.
