Slow light linking on large referenced groups

#1

Hello all,

I’m lighting a short film that makes use of fairly robust character rigs and fully built environments, all referenced in to my lighting file. My intention is to build simple lighting rigs for each character, having lights linked to only affect specific characters, or only the environment. This works in practice using the light relationship editor, however I am encountering sever processing times that make this tedious. While it’s not always the case, usually when I select a light, and select a group for either a character or the environment, Maya locks up to apply the link to all the children nodes. On a decently fast machine, this can take between 20 minutes and a whole hour.

Are there any methods of optimization or working around that can allow me to quickly light link these large groups?

Thank you so much for any help!

you can try making your light link to a selection set. I think from memory it should do only one light link to the set instead of 1 for each instance.
