Skin weigting

#1

Hi,

Is there a way of saving a skin weighting profile?

I have spent a good while tweaking the skin weighting of a character and the skeleton hierarchy and topology will be the same for other characters (with just different proportions)

I would like to be able to use the skin weighting from the character I have done already and apply it to the other characters.

Cheers,

Andy

Export skin weights tool. You need to have proper UVs though.

You can also try plugins that allow you to save your weights without having to use the default Maya way. They either store your weights on a per vertex basis or by world position (it depends on the plugin).
I have written my own tool which is available here:

It only stores per vertex but it’s a reliable tool and has helped me many times.

Thanks goin, that looks perfect for what I want. I’ll give it a whirl and let you know how I get on!

Edit: Is the plug-in directory Program Files > Autodesk > Maya2013 > bin > plug-ins ?

if you are using Maya 2012 and above there is a built method for exporting vertex based weight maps… under Animation> Edit Deformers> Export Deformer Weights

Thanks, yeah I’ve recently found this. Although I didn’t realise there was a menu place for it until you have just kindly pointed out. I was accessing it through the command

cmds.deformerWeights(“filename.xml”, export=True, deformer=“skinCluster1”)

cmds.deformerWeights(“filename.xml”, im=True, m=“index”, deformer=“skinCluster1”)
