I don’t know if anybody has played with this before (I’m sure someone has) but I’m working on a skin surface using materials.

This uses the “toon-shading-fake” technique outlined by Steven Stahlberg. I’ve never seen it used in A:M though.
Any crits?

That looks great!. Did you use compositing to add them together? I have seen a similar thing done with AM ( http://www.kci-group.com/z/skinshading.htm )but it doesn’t allow for shadows. I dont see any shadows on this head iether so is this a limitation? If not then I would love to see a little more about how it was done.
There’s no post-compositing, it’s all done in A:M.
I’ve seen Marcel’s tutorial on faking sub-surface scattering… it was definitely a good jumping-off point. I used
Steven Stahlberg’s tutorial more than anything else. And a few tips from our resident genius Yves Poissant helped out a lot too.
The method I’m using is a bit different from Marcel’s and it does allow for shadows. My biggest problem is that, since you have to turn toon shading on to get the effect everything in the scene must have some sort of toon attributes in order to render.
Of course, you could always render in passes… character, shadow, environment… and composite them all back together.
I’ll post a tutorial once I’m happy with it… or when I get tired of it

Looking forward to it. ![]()
Woo HA! I figured out how to turn Toon Shading on AND get everything to render normally!:buttrock:
Damn this is fun! I should be a TD!
Okay, I’ve got to do some real work now (web design) :annoyed: I’ll try to get the finished surface and the tutorial up this weekend.
BTW - Does anyone have a better human head model I could use? “Gala” is okay but she’s not very detailed (nose, ears) and her head’s kinda lumpy.
Thanks!
J
