Sketchbook Thread of Trunks
Now a little better attempts on this character thumbnails:

So, that’s it, Enjoy!
EDIT: Forgot to upload this piece:

hey thomas,
your last updates are just awesome! ![]()
particularly those blue headstudies!
and your character thumbnails are outstanding for me, especially the dark ones!
did you use an edding and din a4 paper?
those character thumbs are fascinating and inspiring, :applause:
that’s what i want to be able to do some day too… to put my ideas on paper
i would love to see more of these
so long, keep working so hard ![]()
BapKe: Thanks a lot
Nice to read that my work is inspiring
For the dark character thumbnails I used something like an edding and my sketchbook which is about dinA4
I did a few more of this character thumbnails … I still don’t have found the right way to do them …

Here are a few quick gesture studies … I used reference fotos for them, each about 1-5min:

Hey everybody, here is an UPDATE
COMIC
Click on the link to come to my very first comic I ever made. Done with photoshop cs2, it is still a rough sketch and the panels are in german, so sorry for all who cannot understand what the figures are saying. Here is the story in short:
Picture1
Myself:
I have decided to draw my own comic, so I have to find a nice character!
Picture2
Myself:
Nao was writing via ICQ from japan, I had scanned some of my character concepts before so I send them to him and decided to explain him that I am trywing to draw a comic whenever something funny happens in my life.
Picture3
Nao: I want a japan hero!
Picture4
Nao vs. Thomas
Some useless words why a japan hero is not so good. At the end: I am not going do draw a japan hero.
ANY QUESTIONS?
Picture5
Nao: Go for the japan hero!
Myself: No
Picture6
Myself:
Now I am going to do this story as a comic.
Picture8
Nao:
Own goal!
Hope you can get the joke…
Here are some scanned character ideas:

Something other scanned sketchbookstuff:

More attempts on quick gesture drawings, using references:

More gesture drawing attempts on bigger scale, using references:

Drawings from my latest figure drawing session:

Those bigger scale gestures are looking much better! You’ve been more economical with the linework when doing these. You don’t want to make a mess with lines by going over one line tens of times. Of course you can do it very lightly and the go over with confident dark lines on top. You’ve kind of done that with some of your quick gestures.
Also you said that you haven’t found the right way to draw thumbnails. Try starting with a 10-30% marker and go darker to come up with a good looking silhouette. That’s one way. It’s also fun to draw the shape/silhouette and then go over with a pen with lines. The right way is whatever works best for you.
I like these big updates!
Thanks razz, on this thumbnails, I already tried this a little bit. I think for now I am comfortable with how I do them… just with a big or a small marker. Oh and here is another brandnew big update
First of all, random sketchbook stuff:

Selfpotrait, done with gouache (the first time I attempted on gouache)

Gouache second time

More sketchbook stuff (all color is gouache):

unfinished … a little bit …

I am going to color this one with gouache, too:

The very last page of my sketchbook, tomorrow I am going to start a new one:

And now, lifedrawings … this are the ones from last week:

This are the figure drawings from yesterday, we had an awesome model … everything on his body was so much interresting, also he had all this great poses. Great session!
3minutes:

10minutes:

Here is the colored version of this fat guy, and two more pieces…

The colors are not even close to how they really look:

Crybaby!

HEY …Thomas…
Those life drawings are really getting some life in them…GREAT JOB.![]()
I like the way your linework is turning out…lots of variation in it.
Maybe take a few of the poses in your next classes, and give a little more attension to the face, if time allows…just to get the facial charater of the model established.
Doing those exagerated expressions as you are doing, will help you to identify features on the models that stand out…nose, eyes, head shape, ect…features that are unique to each particular model…capture them as you do your gesture drawings in your life class if you have time with the pose…then you will have more than just a life drawing, …you will have a personality with mood, emotion, ect.
Just a thought.
ANYWAY…KEEP UP THE GREAT PROGRESS THOMAS…ALWAYS A REAL PLEASURE SEEING IT…![]()
TAKE CARE
Glenn
Hey Glenn, thanks for stopping by. Great to hear you like the life drawings. I am now trying to get faster and of course spent more time on the faces, but this last model was so great I wanted to spent all time on his body and did not want to waste time on a potrait. I will check out your thread at the weekend and will give you some horrible crits
Great to see you taking part in that new hand OFDW. Drawing hands is always a great idea
Here are a few more potraits … at the moment I am just in it
The first is inspired by Bob Kato.

Hi, here are a few more pieces, just because I scanned them today for a friend … no references used … so enjoy!
