Sketchbook Thread of Stormie

Hey everyone, I’m new here, and like most of you, I’m here to learn how to draw and paint better. I’ll try to update this as much as possible, but I have a habit of starting but never finishing works. The first picture is one of the heads from the 50 heads project. (I’m not sure if I can tackle 50 of those in a month). The second is a painting of Voldemort (character © jk rowling, reference © warner bros). And the third is a painting I did of my boyfriend. Comments and crits appreciated. I know that theres some perspective issues in all 3, I have a lot of trouble with that. :blush:

Hi there Stormie!

Welcome to the forums! I think you’ve done a great job on the first head so far, the values and the shapes look great. The only thing I can see is I think the head should be tilted a little more on your drawing, but otherwise it’s great!

I’ve had the same problem for a long while, but I’ve learned it’s better to just finish a drawing than to just start a new one again, even when you’re not really satisfied with the results. This way you’ll make a lot of “mistakes” in the first drawing and improve a lot more on your 2nd drawing. I don’t know if it really makes sense but it worked for me hehe :blush::shrug:

anyways, I’m looking forward to see some more! (and sorry for the bad english…:blush:)

Hey Elnaz, thanks for your advice. I realize now that it is better to finish something even with mistakes that way you can see your improvement. Here is another head, #53:

Great sketchbook start.
Don’t be scared of going as wide as possible in your value range, without using white and black.

When making a value study it’s always a good thing to try to spot different area’s which have the same value in your reference.
