Sketchbook Thread of Shiroku

#1

Hi, I’m new here and I’ve been trying to improve my figure drawing. I find this forum extremely helpful and I hope to get tips and advices from the experts here^^

1 min gesturals. Trying to loosen up, my drawings are quite stiff as some of my peers often pointed out. These drawings here are in normal leads and coloured ones.

Hands.

That’s it for now. More will be coming soon.

You have some nice gestures going here. I especially like the third set and your hand gestures. You should get in on the anatomy workshops that Rebecca has started. The torso one is almost over, but they will definetly help you out.
Keep up the good work, look forward to seeing more work.

Shiroku,

Hello and welcome to CGTalk and to the Anatomy Forum.

I would agree with spartan02 and encourage you to participate in this ongoing Workshop:

Anatomy Lesson Series: Body Part 2 - The Torso
http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=405198

Even though the Workshop officially ends soon, it will remain open indefinitely and you are of course welcome to use the reference at the beginning of the thread to create Master Copies which you are invited to post both to the Workshop thread and here to your own Personal Sketchbook Thread.

It would be nice if you could tell us something about your art training and background. As well I encourage you to introduce yourself to the community here by posting comments to others’ threads and people will return the favor. I look forward to seeing more of your work.

Cheers,

-Rebeccak

Shiroku - Andrea,

Nice sketches you have here.

Did you check the I5 Minute Sketchathon - Thread 2: Sketches?

you can find some excellent reference pictures in it’s sister thread
I5 Minute Sketchathon - Thread 1: Reference

Good to have you here

Hi Shiroku,

Heh, I saw your post to the poll thread - I’ve been rather tied up / busy lately without as much time to post replies, but believe me I check out nearly every post on the forum here.
There should be another Workshop launched soon, and I hope you will be able to participate. I am hoping to have more free time in December.

Cheers,

I bet you do, Rebeccack^^ I have sketch threads in other forums and they were always largely ignored. However, that’s not the case here, that’s why I love this site so much. I’m very keen of entering the upcoming Workshop, hope it will be up soon. For now, I’ll check on the Heads Workshop, my heads are still quite wonky.

Anyway, these are what I’ve been doing for the past few days. It’s not from class or anything since I’m learning on my own via online from last year or so. However, I will be attending an intensive Life Drawing course on the 13th that has a teacher who’s suppose to be really good. So yeah, thats it about me.

Hi Shiroku

good to hear you’ll be attending life drawing classes (I have to wait until I’m in the 3rd year of the 4 year program I am at, before we start drawing from live models… first 2 years are plaster models… so I’m jealous  )
If you have questions when you are at class… don’t hesitate to ask the teacher… that’s what he/she is there for

anyway,
your sketches look good.
love the lip studies.

when you are doing gestures, I would suggest to try this technique:
look at reference/subject 3seconds, draw one line line. immediately look at reference/subject at the same part you were looking at before you drew the line. Then correct if needed with just one line again.
I’m just suggesting the technique I’m learning at school at the moment. My teacher, Mr Peter van Eyck, tells me I have to draw with my eyes, not with my hand/arm…

Think about it… it will drastically improve your perceptual qualities…

I’ve posted some of my gesturals in the Gestural Thread, but the system wont allow me to post all my images, so here’s my other ones.

Again, crits! crits!
Btw, NR43, I did put what you suggest to practice and they work great^^

Hey that’s impressive… a lot less messier and your lines are showing a lot more dynamic energy…
The technique I was talking about takes is a bit timetaking at first, but the more you do it, the faster you get at it and after a while you will notice you are drawing a lot more accurately…
we even sometimes do exercises… drawing someting without looking at our paper… ofcourse very funny results but actually I really dig the why for this kind of exercise… it forces to focus on the directions of the lines… every line we draw has a certain direction… in a portrait or figure drawing, the direction of each of these lines can be quite decisive, setting mood, energy… telling a story

I think your overall feel for proportion is really good… would love to see you take one of the gestures you really like and develop it further…

REBECCA KIMMEL’S Anatomy Review 002: OPPOSING CURVES could help building a full figure from a gesture drawing I think

If you would like to shade as well I would suggest taking a look at following threads (also by Rebecca):

TUTORIAL - General Principles of Anatomical and Figurative Art / Cross Hatching

REBECCA KIMMEL’S Anatomy Review 003: SHADING TUTORIAL AND HUMAN SKULL EXERCISE

It’s always a wonderful experience to explore other artists sketchbook threads here on the anatomy forum. (I am subscribed to +100 threads here) Really a valuable source of inspiration… Leave a comment and they will surely be curious about your work and the progress you are making
be sure to add a link to your sketchbook thread here in your forum signature (quick links, my profile, edit signature) so people can easily find it

Hope this helps you a bit for now…

Looking forward to see more!

ooo some nice studies. I first introduced myself here with tones of studies. Now they try and kick me out with all my variety!

Looking forward to seeing some persoanlity in your works. Also instead of posting with thumbnails, post in 800x800 so that the viewing is a little easier, thanks.

Hi …Andrea…

REALLY nice start on your thread so far…GREAT progress…
Nice, very fine line shading on those blue ink hand studies…:applause:
The last figures you posted are looking GREAT…you are seeing and drawing the figures in the round…which is key to understanding what you are seeing… …A good way to start the figure in those complex forshortened poses that you are doing, is to get the pelvic area down first, it’s direction in space…whether it is a frontal, three quarter, or side view…seen from directly in front//straight on,…from above,…or from below.
After you have established the pelvis in it’s correct position, add on the lower and upper torso, and it’s ajoining waist line…paying attention to posistion and angles the same way you just did with the pelvis.
Then add on the legs and feet, followed by the arms and hands,…and last, but not least, the neck, head, and face, …in that order…
Hope that this system is of some help to you in your figure drawing.
Looking forward to see more of your works, and the progress that is sure to come with them, with alot of practice…
TAKE CARE
Glenn
