Sketchbook Thread of Schroeder 2D

I’m very insecure about my drawings (you can see why) and this sketchbook is an effort to try to improve them. Of course it is difficult for me to show up here, among very gifted artists, but i’ll do my best.

As for this sketch, for me it is particularly hard to draw from my head, that’s why am sort of satisfied with the result.

Way to go… start your own sketchbook! nothing but improvement from now on… just keep working.
I think that there may be a problem with the image you have posted, I can only see part of it!
cumprimentos

Thanks voraz, i fixed the image. I did take a look at your SB thread, it’s very nice and you seem to be improving well.
I’ll carry on here. Something good may happen.

I watched “Dance me to the end of love” by Leonard Cohen and was inspired to sketch him up. The song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7pA5UhNaYw0
The sketch:

i enjoyed the result in a certain way, although it doesnt look very much like him.

Nice work! One thing to really watch are the axes. If you draw a line between the tops of the brows, and a line across the bottom of the nose, and a line between the two lips, I think you will find that these lines are firstly parallel but that they are also slanted in the other direction. Hold up your pencil to the reference to see.

Here is a quick paintover showing those same principles - really watch the axes of the face:

Hope it helps!

I agree with Rebecca. It all has a lot to do with

direction
distance

your Leonard Cohen portrait for example:
see how in the ref his left eye (to our right) is slightly higher than his right eye.
with the corners of his mouth you can see it even better: the left corner of his mouth is higher than the right corner.
In your drawing it is the other way around.
Also, check the angle on the line that represents the hard edge of his nose.

I like your shading. It shows you are capable of making nuances, although I encourage you to focus on linework and get those directions right, before spending too much time on shading.

Great stuff! Hope to see more soon!

Thanks for the feedback, i appreciate it.

You are both right. I should first get the proportions and relations correctly and then continue the drawing. I was just too eager to finish it, cohen took something like 40 to 50 min.
“all we need is just a little patience”.
