Thanks Gunilla!

Here’s some figure drawin’ poopies:

These are some 1 minute studies from figure drawing on Feb. 11. Mind you, there are many…bear with me:

That’s it for the 1 minute studies.

#102

now on to the 2s:

#103

now on to the 3-5s (most of these are 5s, but my first one in the lower margin is a 3 - sharpening pencils, gearing up, etc)
one note: i opted to slow down because my brain was melting at this point.

Whew…now back to work. Next Saturday will be 25 minute poses, so I hope to not kill ya’ll with SB pages upon pages.

Also, here’s some more anatomy stuff: revision work to a 9to5 project - added in the sole of the foot and pushed the bones back, as well as addin’ in the fibula and talus. Joy!

Her’es another: back of the thigh at the top, near that butt crease - focus is on the sciatic nerve’s distinct branching to the hamstrings. This will be 18x24" for a poster, then scaled down for publication. Drawing was done with 2B pencil on tracing paper, scanned and toned up quickly in Photoshop. Labeled in InDesign.
I have found the beauty of the “Comb” brush and have created a quick Action script (F5=angle 1, F6=angle 2) to toggle quickly between the two brushes and enable fast cross hatching. Is it possible to love life any more? Sweet bliss.

I’m ramblin…here’s the image.

Update on my glands/lymph nodes figure. Aside from revising some wet hilites due to duplicating and moving some of the lymph, this is what it will look like (but with labels added). May be including the trachea, but waiting on client confirmation on that one.

Cheers!

Hey Rebecca!
Thanks - means a lot to get that vote of confidence from ya.
I’ve been doing a lot of reading of artistic anatomy books and your course as well as comments by past instructors are starting to sink in. As long as I’m patient, the figure will come.

Here’s a bit more work on my heart (self-motivated) project. Only an additional 30 minutes so far…

I figure this will take me about 8 more hours before I’m satisfied.

Cheers!

Really beautiful work, David! There’s a nice dreamy quality to this painting, which me likes!!

Ever seen the work of Joel Peter Witkin? Oh, it’s completely sublime! Creepy sublime, but sublime nonetheless…

hey rebecca,

i’lll have to check into that artist - creepy and cool at the same time.

here’s my arm study from figure drawing today. i couldn’t get into drawing her entire form because of a few mental blocks: 1) her tat covered her entire back making it intriguing to look at, but difficult to establish shadows and contours of the back; 2) only a fraction of her face was showing (profile) and it was all covered with hair (not that she was hairy…she had a mop of hair on her head…); 3) too many lights made it tough to establish good form. that said, i was totally intrigued by her left elbow and side of body. this is about a 1.5 - 1.75 hour study since i erased and re-erased three times prior to this study. argh. btw, 4b pencil is my new best friend.
the drawing presented here is roughly 10x20" and had to be scanned in two passes…pardon my quick match up and blend.

This is a revision to my hamstring project (posted a few days back on my ca.org sb thread). The positions of the sciatic nerve branches are more specific now based on my client’s cadaveric dissections. I spent two more hours on this to get the nerves in place and rendered up the muscle bellies a wee bit more. The difficult part was figuring out the proper distances based off of my client’s findings and my drawings (scale ratios, et al). But I figured it out. Enough talking…here’s the image:

Sorry I’ve been away for so long. Oy.
Here’s a massing of things I have done recently. Please pardon some of the images - they’re for work and are educational-based.
That said, on with the update:

Here’s an update to my heart illustration - self project. Slowly building the form. Don’t know why this is taking me so long…lol. It’s a bit on the dark side (not of the force kind…) but it will lighten up soon.

The next three are images for education in Thailand (health practicioners on HIV-AIDS). This is male ano-rectal and uro-rectal anatomy in transverse and mid-sagittal section as well as from below. These were done 100% digitally.
This first one took about 3 hours.

This second one took about 2.5 hours.

This third one took about 6 hours.

All three of the aforementioned images would be for projection and print. They do have labels in the final final form.

A little hamstring update - my cient wanted to better show the distribution of the nerves to each muscle (biceps femoris, semitend and semimemb muscles). It’ll be grayscale for final and with labels…just added a quick value layer for the joy of it.

Here’s an update to the foot project. I had to completely redo it since they wanted to move away from this x-ray version I had done earlier and have a more neutrally posed foot. The foot is an actual photograph of my client’s foot.
Rather than repaint the skin of the foot, I went with just illustrating the bones within the foot (as determined by surface landmark and reference material) and giving a bit of vector quality to the foot outline and nerve. Both the hamstring and the foot images were for the same client - both were successes! Will be used for poster and in print.

Cheers!
Dave

More figure drawing from last Saturday. These are one, two and five minute studies. Pencil on SB paper, roughly 5" high for the good lot of them.

The onesies: always tough to warm up…I also arrived late, so not so many of these. :frowning:

Twosies: starting to loosen up a bit…I think.

fivesies: droppin’ in “slinky” tone

Cheers!

Here’s a fun Thunderdome project going on between Seattle and SoCal called “A boy and his dog”. I’m taking a children’s book theme to this project.

This was the first take. A 45 minute sketch on what i had in mind initially.
Arthur, as a boy and his precious pal Cabal chase after this pig-nosed turtle in mid air…yeah…they defy gravity…it’s my story. lol
The turtle’s name is Tared, aka the twrch trwyth in the mythic tale of King Arthur and Cabal hunting down this boar/pig which has a comb and scissors attached to its body. Long story short, Culhwch (a cousin of arthur’s) wants to marry this gal Olwen and he can only do so with this hair cutting ceremony as stated by Olwen’s gigantic padre Ysbaddaden. Only Arthur’s dog, Cabal, can hunt down this “pig” to retrieve the items.
Whew!..that said, this is just a very light hearted interpretation. I was going to have a pig flying instead of the pig-nosed turtle playing on the ‘when pigs fly’ theme to aide the idea behind them all floating. (Of course, this is what I actually did do, as seen in the updated concept after this image).

Okay! I went back to work on the concept and tried to be more direct and less obscure with my story telling. I want this to be as if it were a page in a children’s book. I’m using my friend’s typeface: gracie script. It’s quickly placed for now…
Further development on this concept is that the scene will be from a story quilt, and not a book. That said, everything is going to be ‘embroidered’ and have little gems and beads all drawn in to give the sense of dimensionality and some historical flair. Some of the earliest quilts were actually done to provide some comfort when wearing armor. Thought this was a perfect combination and something out of the norm from just painting the scene. It’s also a huge challenge for me.

I’ll be working on this with a lot of heart and determination this weekend.

Cheers!

Your anatomical studies are awesome. Like, seriously. I love the Thunderdome sketches, too. But y’know what really floored me? Your figures. Lovely, lovely flow, very gracious and very dynamic. Nice values, too, for the last set.

#115

Hey Rebecca,

Many thanks for the link to the competition! Not sure I’m going to do it…hard to say with work and…ahem…upcoming projects…nudge, nudge.
I may be working on some gaming concepts with a buddy- kinda metaphysical stuff…but would be cool none-the-less. Who knows.
Hope the workshop is going good!

LoTekk - Many thanks! Figure work has been on my brain ever since the “Drawing on the Past” class wrapped up. Been pretty consistent since mid Jan 2006 with going to Saturday figure drawing. I’ll keep it going and this Spring I’ll start hitting the zoo for animal figure studies. I’m honored by your comments!

Cheers!
D

YARGH! I can’t keep up following the awesomeness of Dave! :scream:

Fantastic work. I keep bouncing between here and your CA sketchbook!

Hi…Redehlert // David

Those are some beautiful gesture drawings you have going there…great line work
and technique…really enjoying your thread…

Yargh indeed!
Thanks Martin! BTW, the only ‘real’ difference between this SB and my SB on conceptart will be a lack of creatures in this thread.

Spirit Dreamer - I’m honored. Thank you for stoppin’ by and giving me your thoughts.

Here’s a doodle for the 15 minute sketch thread (although mine always come out as 20 minutes…sigh).

#119

Hi, was just looking through some threads, saw yours, and really liked a bunch of your work, especially the gesture in your figures. Please keep it up

#120

Why is it that your 20 minutes look like my hours?

Rocking.
