aha! a study of the most perfect head of all times (at least imho)
The fact that it’s shaped so wonderfully can be a bit intimidating sometimes don’t you think?

Be careful when drawing heads unders an angle concerning the placement of the facial features. The centre line of the face would and eyebrow line must always appear to be crossing eachother at 90degrees. Mind the exspression “appear to be”.

So in your study that would mean bringing the mouth and the bottom of the nose more to the left (our left)

How long do you spend average on those drawings? (just curious)
One thing that is fun to do is to make some quick sketches of the same head before starting a longer study. We had to do 1min, 2min30, 5min, 10min and 20min sketches last night in class and it was really impressive to see everyone’s “auto-correction mode”.
i’ll post some examples in my own thread tonight so yuo can see what I mean :wink:

lol, not really intimidating imo, i think its intresting to draw, head orientation with the neck and the expression, its very intresting, i’m more intrested in copying from sculptures than from paintings, dont know why, may be its the light and shadows, they are more 3d. that must be intresting the quick sketches way, i will give it a try next. i see the mouth needs to go left a bit , i saw it , and raised a bit also i think, thnx for the tip.
it takes me 3 to 4 hours to finish a drawing, i hope speed will come with practice. right now i’m working on a torso and a 3d bust, will post tonight.

Good to see all of your work. :slight_smile: I don’t know if you’ve seen this tutorial, but you might find the exercise helpful (it’s been helpful to me to do this, even if it seems a very basic exercise):

I think the main thing lacking in the bust drawings is a total consistency in terms of following the topology of the form - I think if you think more of your eye as traveling along the surface of the topology of the form and mapping it, you will see areas that seem a bit flat because their height in relationship to the viewer is less clear than in other areas. Hope this helps / makes sense. :slight_smile: It’s something we all struggle with in our work.

a great drawing in the making I see.

A good way to see if a particular area is shaded dark enough is to search for other areas within the subject of the same value.
Overall I think making areas like the totally unlit parts (under the nose, the top of the right ear, unlit parts of the hair at the top of the head and low in the neck), the chest, and cheekbone, the wrinkle at the right side of the mouth/chin barrel etc

The neck muscles could also be more defined and her left Sternocleidomastoid should be fixed. The position and angle is off.

For your next drawing I would say try to depend less on your linedrawing. It’s ok to make a linedrawing very lightly to get the composition and proportions right, but don’t let yourself being entrapped within the boundaries of your linesketch.
One might have to correct while shading here and there, that’s ok.
When the shading is coming along you might want to emphasize certain details, edges, etc by adding a line…

hi Rebecca, yes i see what you mean, first i didn’t understand the words lool, but i got it when i saw the tut. i’ll be doin her again with the crossing contours, that would definetly help, thanx fo the tip and tut, first time to see it.

hi Johan, thats a great tip, more care with the form and shadow tones, evolve and correct lines with shadows. thats great, i think it will also add richness to the drawings

haaaaahaa, i couldn’t even complete reading it, i looked to the drawing to find whats wrong at the left and that would be the muscle thing you called loool, then searched it on google images and then got it ,lol. the site is intresting 2 , thx.

Hey mahmoud, some great master copies in this thread, really like the last David one, great! The 3d study is looking pretty good, though the shoulders look quite wide… you could be going for that look, but most anatomy books tend to point to the figure being two heads wide, whereas yours in going on three… but it doesn’t look unnatural, he just looks broad shouldered, so up to you whether you change it. I like his hair though… :smiley:

Hmm, the head seems a bit small for the chest so far, maybe enlarge the head or reduce the size of the chest? The drawings are looking good, I might suggest doing timed gestures, maybe 2/5/10 minute drawings that really push you to get the gesture and flow of the figures. Looking forward to more! :slight_smile:

Hey “Mahmoudcg”,

Nice work so far. I like your unique shading style and the figures itself. Michelangelo´s drawing is always a good reference to learn from.

Considering you´re still working in your last post, I think you need to finish the man´s “thing” (genital, member, whatever is the word I don´t know in english). Or, if you prefer, add some fabrics and study a bit of folds.

I know we man fell uncofortable drawing that “thing” … but… hey. It´s the human body. :slight_smile:

lol, yes exactly, whenever I find myself working it I get distracted and think like What the hell am I doing and I leave it. don’t know if leaving the organ really ruins the study, you tell me.

lol I was doing a torso study in class last week and one of my female fellow students was laughing at me and my male colleagues… turned out we had all drawn his willy bigger than it actually was… now is that good or bad? :smiley:
