Sketchbook Thread of Lute

bangs her head on her desk

ell… this past weekenend… a friend of mine… saw my thread… and he said to me…that my stuff was unstructured… He mostly expressed that…akk of my stuff…well…anything involving anatomy is very stiff… And sadly… its soooo very true… alot of my artwork that ive done…is very stiff and lacks motion… and no matter how much…anatomy i learn… i’ll have this “stiffness” in the drawings… he recommended me… “some drawing comic book superheros” the one by stan lee and john buscama…a chapter that talked about the action line…and the next chapter…

so…i took a hold… of learning how to draw anything else… i need to shake this stiffness out of me… its funny…when i draw…anything… i feel stiff…i cant shake it out of me… they say…when you draw something in movment… u can
“feel” the movement

anywho…this is what i was working on over the weekend…
a couple of gestures

the first 4… was from my imagination…

the last two right here…was me watching people in the subway, alot of the times. i had to sketch as fast as i can…and then put down…the rest i remebered.

Coool stuff… I know what you mean about the stiffness… you might want to just do stuff from life or doing master drawings… that’s i’ve been trying

#44

Lute,

Good to see your sketches. Keep practicing, it all builds up. I think you should try a mix of Master Studies and these Gesture Studies. It’s often a good idea to be studying two different kinds of things as once, as they will feed into and inform each other.

Great groundwork lute. You keep going with this and you’ll be kickass in no time.

#46

i guess i’ll make this quick… i was stuck in a rut… and i was able to do something today…
i guess when i go home… i’ll post a bit more
its nothing much… but its still something… :3
please critique :3

Hi Lute I’ll try to do a few crits:

You’ve made great strides on the individual elements. The lips are liplike, the nose reads well, and the eyes have everything in them. The next bit will be getting em all in the right places. Of course individual heads are… individual… but the guide lines i have in there are the ‘standard’ bits.

Really seems like you’ve made great strides on all the pieces, and I know you’ve done some work on the head in perspective so it should all come together for you well

Lute,

You’re doing a nice job with these, I think the key to your improvement will be quantity; keep going!

I cant beleive ive been going at this since early may or june… :3
but i feel like… im ready to push it a bit more… hehehe
well here are some things…

i have a very bad habit… on drawing on post-its at work… i thought it was bs…because i thought there was no way i could scan them in. but i decieded to take the ones i did… and im surprised on how im able to scan them in :3

Well i used to remeber when I used draw (back in the day) the one area that made me not sure… of myself was the shoulders and neck…especially when you have to draw it in different positions. well i got fustrated took out an anatomy book… and just studied…it
and you know what :3 i learned somehting new. In this post it. I did everything i learned from memory. Im kidna impressed with the guy i drew. hehehee :3

a couple of more… with the post-its

did this with pen…when i got home. I am feeling more confident about this. But what lacks is my imagination to create more gestures. Hmm… listening to good music helps. You get to imagine different body positions.

I always loved drawing with pen. but you got to be precise with it… or else it gets messy

some poses you might recongize it from hogarth…and some are mine :3
you figure it out HAHAHAHA

but i did realize something. i need to work on shading. especially when it comes to where to place the shadows on the face.

Lute,

Really like the direction these types of sketches are going in:

[left]Nicely loose, structural, not literal. Keep aiming for this!

#54

something new… i did last night… i soo need to work on the anatomy…
:frowning: not happy on how i drew the eyes…

#55

Hi Lute,

Keep after it! I really think you ought to try to do a few master copies from the 50 Portraits Thread. Why not just try one or two?

Cheers,

~Rebeccak

#56

thank you Rebeccak…
i have the first image on top of my computer…
im too lazy to start ^^;;;

#57

IM HERE TO PUMP CLAPS YOU UP

yawns this is not easy. i got lazy. but i have a good idea on the form. especially when i drew one front side and back side. i can imagine how it looks in 3d. but i dont think thats enough. i dont know how im going to be able to have this in my head.s o it will be easier to recall it.when i need to draw an arm
oh well.
when i have a better grasps on the arms. next stop… hands

#58

Lute,

Nice to see these studies ~ actually am pretty impressed, these don’t look as though they cost you much effort, so keep going ~ would like to see hand studies as well.

its been a while since i’ve last updated, but like kistu said. long before.when i dont post. im actually doing something. and i have, since wednesday. ive been taking figure drawing classes. so i had stuff to but i need to take a photo of them since they’re 18 by 24. but…today i also went to class, which was cool i learned alot about the shoulder area. Im not sure how… its gonna improve my work. nor how to take the information in I guess by looking at the structure and understand how it is. ?
any tips?
