Hi all, long time no see, ive been working on something comepletely new for me, a departure from my usual work......its really about the wasteful nature of humanity, i`ve always found it interesting [not to mention ironic] the way we can create a work of art from something that others throw away…

its been tough here this last year, i havent sold anything for some time, thought it was time i did something completely different, something original i guess…i had an idea to recycle old technology and use it as a medium to sculpt with, so i scrounged old tvs, vcrs, cd players, fax machines, printers, off friends and family and stripped them down and recycled them in a rather unconventional manner…it has taken me the best part of a year to get to grips with this, lots of r&d, blind alleys, etc. but ive finally finished it, and im really pleased with the way it turned out…i wasnt sure what kind of category to put this in really, its kind of Recycled Realism i suppose, anyway here it is and i hope you have fun looking…

PS - it doesn`t really yet have a name, my sister calls it the ‘Ode To Modern Man’…

Love that piece, and the thought and idea behind it…:thumbsup: …If it were to talk, I wonder what it would say…:banghead: :scream: :eek: …Would be fun to put a tape player into it and have it voice some of it’s opinions on humanity, technology, waste disposal and voice it’s reflections of how it came into being, and where and how it might end up…:hmm:

Just a fun thought…:smiley:

Hi Glenn, haha, yeah, it might have some cutting things to say ill wager lol....ive been thinking, due in some part to the things people have been saying, that it might be an idea to keep working on the piece until i get a part bust, that would cover the rod and base which some have said detracts from the work, i was thinking of doing that anyway so maybe i`ll keep going…

Been working on some small busts using polymer clay and here are pics of the first one…the sculpture is 15cm high, the bust itself only 10cm, the head 5cm…

the clay is called Sculpey a polymer, or oil, based clay used mainly in the film or game industry. it also a unique feature among polymer clays, you can bake it in the oven. bake it a conventional oven for an hour @ 150c and it will go rock hard, so hard that you can drill it. pretty amzing stuff, odd to work with at first but you get used to it. there are other oil based clays, Chavant is another, im using that now so ill post the results and thoughts when im done. both Chavant and Sculpey are very fine so you can get lots of detail in your work. unfortunately you cant bake Chavant in the oven it stays relatively soft, it`s usually used as a base to make something more permanent, like a bronze.

Cool! Real stuff, not polygons. I’ve seen THIS yesterday and it reminded me how amazingly awesome sculpting is, out of clay or polygons. But having the physical thing must feel better :slight_smile:

i love working with something in my hands, guess ive worked so long with my hands [engineering] that it comes as second nature.....the guys in your video rock dont they, seriously good stuff…i love the work of Jordu Schell, dont know if youve heard of him…

Wow I really like your ‘Ode to modern man’ (I like your sister’s name so going with that…) - the colours and materials are just great! And I like the way you’ve brought it all together to create a really interesting piece - it’s like Glenn says, he seems to know a lot :slight_smile: The old man is looking good too :thumbsup:
