Sketchbook Thread of Kevin

#1

Welcome to my sketchbook thread. I won’t post everything I draw, simply because I’m afraid the internet might explode. I’ll stick to posting stuff I would like critique of. Most of what I’m doing now is character design, storyboarding and layout, and maybe some anatomy studies.

For the most part I work on marker paper with Prismacolor col-erase blue pencils. Most of my character designs however I like to do on mid-tone pastel paper. I start with the blue pencil for a general shape, and then use black and white to do shadows and highlights to develop the shapes.

Summer Character Designs

So this summer I decided to focus on improving two things. One, being learning some 3D stuff and get better at digital painting. Second, I needed to get better at designing human characters. I’ve been working on my breaks at work this summer on designing and developing a better method for designing human characters. Well the summer is almost done, so I’ll now post the results of that work.

So some days I got more done than others. Most of these took between 5 and 10 minutes. You may notice that some pages have the same expression over and over, don’t worry, its intentional. There are some I had struggled with, and wanted to try out some different shaped characters with them, using different angles and such. Most I ocnsider just a learning experience, but there are 5-8 I would consider good enough to develop into an actual character should I need it.

I’m actually using a few of these as characters in my Strange Behavior illustration (just for background).

Comments are welcome
Thanks

Hi…Kevin …

Nice characters and expressions…
I’m curious, what digital program will you be using for your 2d stuff…If you have Painter #9 or 10, …you should have a lot of fun using the liquid lens brushes…great for exageration of the expressions…I think that photo shop has something similar…not sure, I use painter #9 myself…
Anyway ,…Looking forward to seeing more of your work, and progress also…

Thanks for the reply Glenn

Right now I’m using Alias Sketchbook. I’m still a student, so I can’t afford anything better. Even this software was just something that came with a book I bought. I like it though, I do a lot of quick sketching for practice with my tablet, as I’ve only had it about 8 months, and I like how it works.

I have used both Painter X and Photoshop CS3, as they have both at my school, Sheridan College. It’s sort of tough during this competition having to do bits and pieces with one software and then patch it together with the better software when I hav access to it.

Though hopefully if my painting turns out as well as I hope, maybe I could win new software as one of the prizes. Although i just wish software was like anything else, when the new version comes out, the old version gets much cheaper. I know it happens now, but certainly not enough for a students budget.

And which menu is the liquid lens brush? It sounds good, and I’d like to try it next time I’m there.

Hi …Kevin …

The LIQUID LENS BRUSHES IN PAINTER#9…SHOULLD BE THE SAME IN PAINTER #10.
At the very top of your screen, 4th in from left…LAYERS…select that.
Menu comes up…at the very bottom of that menu…DYNAMIC PLUGINS…select that.
Menu comes up…LIQUID LENS …select it.
Top square on the left in the LIQUID LENS section will let you do all kinds of things with those facial expressions…try all of those brushes out…they sometimes leave a jagged edge…just go over that edge with a softener brush, found in the TINTING BRUSHES SECTION…IN THE BRUSHES SECTION.
Hope that helps…Looking forward to seeing your first efforts with that LIQUID LENS…GREAT TOOL…
