Good self-critique on the witch image, the broom does look like a lens. Maybe some refs could help you out here. Not sure if you’re using any for you stuff?
Nice tree. You could’ve spent another fifteen minutes so that it wouldn’t be flying in nothingness.
Always a pleasure to stop by your thread, mate
Sketchbook Thread of Johan Derycke
Magdalena LOL you’re obviously a fan
Alena, wait until januari (or whenever they will decide to finally kick me out at work), then I’ll have a lot more time to paint… I promise you will see lots of stuff happening here then
razz yep. Valid crit. But I had to get the kids from school. Noway I’m letting them wait for a painting
Here’s some of last night’s life drawings. 1st one is pencil, 2nd and 3rd are fine tip pen. Kind of a weird effect on this paper, but I kinda like it. About 15 min each (I think, could be a bit more)

Thanks Andrew
Here’s a couple more from last night. Not too good, although I like the blue ink ones.

Thanks. No life drawing at your academy?? Strange! Maybe consider going a lil further to a bigger academy?
I wanted to have this one finished by now but in fact I only had time to do very little work on this piece. Sorry. Hope you all had a great halloween anywayz

More soon.
Self Portrait day tomorrow!!
Hi Johan, there are life drawing lessons at our academy, but only 15 lessons a year or so. We’ll have a few sessions next month, so something to look forward to.
Bart
That’s too bad man, come to Leuven you can sketch with me at our life class every day then
Kris
Thanks buddy!
You don’t seem to be doing too bad yerself
Love that coffee cup!
And I’m really looking forward to see where you take that Hercules sculpt! (it looks awesome already!)
Here’s my SP for theCA thread of the day!

Soon I’ll have plenty of time to draw and paint!
My imagination muscle needs some serious asskicking so I’ve got good hopes for the future!
Working hard is so cool!
Oh man if you’d nail a painting like that everyday…! I see you’ve been working on the idea a bit also, I just went with the first one that came to my mind. Thanks for reminding me about this day. Made it quite better for me then it would’ve been
You’re already working hard, what will happen when you’ll be given more time, ha! Looking forward to that. Good attitude
Heh thanks Razz.
I hope I will improve a lot because I’ve not read too many encouraging things about Belgian publishers and so on. Also, there’s a lot of stuff that is getting loads of prizes and awards in the dutch speaking area, of which the style just doesn’t look like what I do at all. I’ve been doing a lot of research about the Belgian Illustration market lately, and I can conclude that my type of illustration does not seem to fit in this Belgian Illustrator’s scene at all. However, I will try to see this as a something good though. It’s gonna be really hard to get a first real publication, but I think once that happens my credibility as an illustrator will increase. It’s an extremely challenging goal to work for. That alone, is supermotivating me
Here’s a few examples of “famous” Belgian Illustrators, to give you an idea.:
Sabien Clement
Klaas Verplancke
If you want to get a broader idea of the Flemish Illustration scene, take a look here:
Flemish Illustrators
Comics is a completely different world than illustration, but I’ve been reading more comics lately and I’m getting hooked. Here’s a flemish comic artist I recently discovered.
His stuff is just awesome!
Ken Broeders
Anyway… I’ve got a long and hard road ahead, but I’m just so glad I’m getting this opportunity, I would die of regrets if I don’t see this as a chance and at least give it a try.
Thanks for the encouragement! That really rocks!
Just a quick study from photoref I did this morning

Hey Johan, just looking through your recent stuff and i’m really digging it! Your line control is getting very good with the pencil drawings. That latest painting is very nice too! Its great to see you working this hard at your craft…looking foward to more!
wow you got it right! hehe…the proportions the shading…looks well done!! any tips on those hatching/shading techniques??
Andrew LOL thanks!
Zach I feel I need to improve a lot more though. But thanks for the encouragement. Always appreciated!
Richa Hey you! How have you been? Had a peep at your blog, looks quite nice
About the techniques… I’m trying to work less from the wrist and more from the shoulder. It’s harder to control at first but I think in the end I will have much more solid work that way.
Newsflash:
We were struck by the Mexican flu. While my daughters only had a bit of fever for 2 days, without any other discomforts, my gf, Lars and I were smacked down to the floor for a whole week. I’ve never been this sick in my life… wth was that??
Anyway, we feared the most for Lars, as he’s got very weak airways and is highly allergic to all sorts of stuff. So we had to follow up on him quite closely to make sure he wouldn’t end up in the hospital. Fortunately, he started to get better just as we were about to lose all hope. So we are all still recovering from that now… If you’ve not been infected yet, get a vaccination asap!
So here’s a SP with compressed charcoal on A3 to get back into it. It’s an asignment for school.

And some of the school work I think I hadn’t posted yet.

More soon!
looks like school is going well, nice to see all the life drawings, I sure do miss doing that!
I looked at some of the links to illustrators in your country - very much a super-stylized or cartoony look. I can see why you think you’d have trouble in that market - I think a lot of people here would, as we’re pretty focused on realism. Maybe look into… bands that might want CD covers, book covers, places that do RPG (role playing game) cards?
Hi Del
Yeah I love the academy! I’ve missed a lot of classes already this year due to sickness and it really hurt the most that I couln’t be there. I wouldn’t want to miss it for the world and I’m gonna spend many, many years there in the future! That’s a promise!

Yeah, book covers is my first choice.
That’s what my portfolio should be made of (mainly) when I start submitting it.
The cartoony look has been popular for quite a few years here now. I’m confident that the market is gonna get tired of that sooner or later. The fact that realistic style is very popular right now in the US, is something that can be of my advantage. Europe usually follows the American trends with a margin of a few years. Perhaps that time will arrive soon and I can benefit from it. No time to waste!
dscavenger Thanks mate!
Went 3 days this week iso 2, but left most drawings in my drawer at the academy.
Here’s a couple from this week, about 15min each:
