Sketchbook Thread of Jho

Female anatomy today, or not correct kind a way anatomy… I was just thinking that if I want to be a comic artist, I have to master drawing sexy women. So I was studying what makes certain women look sexy.
I don’t know if I succeeded, but I learned something I guess.

One thing I was thinking was the jaw, usually women that are supposed to look atractive, have a pointy jaw. But I sometimes notice really beautiful women with a wide jaw.

Pffff. plah plah, like I would know anything that I’m doing
here are the pics, :

Hi all. I’m back from Germany, and I have some new sketches… Here they are:

#23

Jho,

Good to see more of your work! I hope you are feeling better, certainly all artists go through some down periods, that’s just a part of being us.

One thing I would really recommend doing is life drawing if you can. Are there any places near you that offer life drawing sessions? If not, Master Copies are the next best thing, and are, in some cases, better exercises than life drawing. I recommend really going after these head studies in a seriously focused way, and worrying less about number than quality. Maybe choose three or four that you really like and do some extended studies of them.

Looking forward to seeing more of your work!

Cheers,

~Rebeccak

Hiya Jho

Good to see you are back posting  keep it up, it’s all about practice and having fun while you do it
I don’t understand much Finish… but I do know what Perkele means… made me laugh

take care
a.

#27

Made a little tutorial about figures in perspective, if anyones intterested. And heres a new sketch.
Both owe Loomis a big deal

By the way. Thanks Frej and Rebecca, I really appreciate your comforting words, this things are just the kind I find hard to talk to friends and even if I do I don’t feel like I’m being understood correctly.
I’m just trying to find my place in the world, and it would be alot easier if I had chosen to be a engeneer or a buss driver
Its really comforting to know there are others, even a bit like me.

A few new.

I was thinking if someone could tell me where I’m standing?
I mean, I don’t really have a clue, wether I’m ready to start sending out samples to Marvel, White wolf etc. Or in desperate need of studying, before I can even dream of something like that.
I have never studied art, so Internet is the only place where I see other peoples work, and it seems I’m far behind.
But I’d still like to know wether I stand a change to work as a concept artist or an illustartor with my current skills, and if not, what do I mostly have to consentrate on.

Put some new heads in the anatomy thread:

#30

Sketching…

#31

Did some Marvel characters again:

Tried to give this a sense of movement, I’m not 100% happy with the result, but I think it turned out fine.

I can’t pinpoint the error in this one, is it the leg weight is on? Something is slowening the kick…
But I think I did ok with the anatomy, for such a hard position anyways…

Hi

I just browsed through your nice sketchbook.

I absolutely loved the heads in those panels on page 2. Tight work there.

on page one you asked

But was the main point to make the picture firs in black and white?
And then coloring on top of it?

I haven’t seen this answered for you so I’ll give it a shot:

- colour consists of hue saturation and value
- when you concentrate on b/w first all that is left is value
- value constitutes light and form - if values are not correct, hue and saturation won’t save you
- by getting those straight first you do the most important things first
- then you paint on another layer set to mode “color”
- the colours you choose ignore the value you chose in the color picker, but receive this parameter from the underlying layer with the b/w painting thus keeping the values of your study
- when the values are right, you can choose about any hue and the painting will come out right.

See zhuzhu’s anatomy thread to find this put to masterful use…

I am not a comics expert, but I would say the main point that strikes my eye is proportions and foreshortening. As a comic artist you wuold also have to have a very detailed knowledge of anatomy in order to know exactly which aspects to simplify and how. At the moment some of your simplifications work and some do not.

the sketch with spidey and a villain features working simplifications while the one below with the woman kicking sort of oversimplifies certain anatomical aspects (face, leg) or just not at the right spots, I don’t know.

Keep posting for sure, coz you damn well improved, imo!

EDIT: Damn I cant get rid of the bold type…don’t bother…
EDIT: huh? Or did I…?

First of all Thanks alot Mu!! I have tried to do a couple of pieces with that technic, but I always get frustrated with it and give up, but I’ll keep trying and post them whenever I finish something, I will…
I was in Germany just a few weeks ago, I wonder if I saw you

And here is some todays sketches, I was practising kicks and punches:

In the last one I took picktures of myself with a webcam and used them as a preference, it was a great help

Some lovely work here, it’s great to see a more americanised comic style here in the anatomy forums too. You do have a great sense for movement, but I’d say definitely brushing up on the general muscular forms that lie close to the skin and what they look like when tensed would help a great deal, maybe doing some studies from both masters and maybe some more pumped up model photos might help! Though your linework and gestural quality is good thus far.

#35

nice dynamic images, much energy in it. not much to crit, keep studying!
I think theres already a lot of progress in this thread!

Zephyri: Thank you, just the field I’m trying to conquest, so the positive feedback feels really nice
I know I still got alot to learn about muscles, actually I’m posting some studies in this post
But I’m actually reaching a style with no supernatural muscles, maybe something a bit like JR JR or a bit John Byrneisch :), perhaps little cubick too. Meaning that even if I ever made it to Marvel etc. drawing comics, I wouldn’t want to do the usual building sized muscles and other stuff of that sort.

Cyanid: Cyan? The Coen from conceptart by any chance?
Thanks alot anyways. The main reason I started this sketchbook was to get something that would force me to sketch and make progress in the err. progress

Dodged drawing my comic, and did sketches instead, lazy as I am

I’m always unsure while painting digitally, and don’t ever post digital pieces, but I guess that is unwise, because that is the field I need most help in, so here is a practise I did a minute ago, its not anything special, I just hope to get some critics in hope of improving:

#38

Been sick for the past week and unable to draw (I promised my wife not to  ). But now I’m all better and started sketching again tonight:

#39

Jho,

For digital painting, I really encourage you to check out and try the exercise summarized here:

TUTORIAL SUMMARY - Anatomy Review 003 Shading Tutorial - Tutorial Material Only

There is a link to the SPOTLIGHT images from this former Workshop as well which you can browse through for inspiration.

I highly recommend that beginning digital artists explore grayscale. It’s really important to understand value before color - it’s the critical link between drawing and painting.

Cheers,

Hiy Jho

Been a while since I popped in, good to see you are posting and back from being sick…
good head studies, looking at different angles  And I think it’s a great idea for you to post more of your digital work here as there are so many experts (obviously not me :D) that can guide you and offer advice along the way.

Keep it up and enjoy!

a.
