Hey,

I recently subscribed to the online class of digital painting by Bobby Chiu which is just awesome.
First assignment was to paint in grayscale a drawing by Bobby.
Here’s my assignment:

Critiques and comments are welcome as usual.

After taking that first digital painting class, I decided to apply the technique to a new drawing. I took the model in Maughan’s book and painted my scanned sketch.
Here’s the image after 3h of work:

Comments are appreciated so I can finnish the image

Hi,

Here are some updates after long time:) Got busy last month with 11 second Club and hollydays.

#24

Hey,
Here’s a new digital portrait done using painter. I really like the “painterly” look of the oil brushes.

#25

Nice updates! Looks like your hard work is paying off. I recognize that last head from Bob Kato’s dvd, he was a former teacher of mine. Good stuff!

#26

Hey thanks Rebecca,

Indeed I used Bob Kato’s lessons on this last one. He really is a great teacher! Lucky you could be one of his students:)

Hi gregoo23.
I love the look of thick brushes too. Very nice piece. I love the monochrome.
A couple of things. I sure aint no painter so forgive me. All figures are asymmetrical in detail but it looks a bit like you have some hand bias going on in the last one and the lady portrait on this page. Did you flip the canvas horizontally to check the asymmetry? An old trick to counter this is to alternate viewing angle with every other sketch, which it looks like you are doing. Also maybe try some more dramatic angles to view the face from as the last pieces are fairly even and relaxed. This way the 3d cam in your head gets more excersize.

The strokes look pretty even but it looks like you are paying alot of attention to direction, if you also vary the length of the strokes the fat brush will tell more of a story. Like varying detail over a mesh stops it from getting monotonous.

Looks great

Hey Kanga,

Thanks for the comments. I’m still really new to the “painting” world, so I try every time to incorporate improvements in new paintings. Interesting comments about varying brush strokes, I’ll try that. I also try to flip the canvas and I almost always notice how much some parts are really off  but still I think I improved that a bit.
On the next pieces I’ll try to change the head angle too…It was easier to start with front view and I consider more these first painting as exercises of course.
Thanks again for comments it’s really helpfull

Nice paintings and drawings! I really like you’re greyscale work alot.

#34

Here’s my first attempt at traditionnal sculpting. Much fun but way more difficult to correct than digital sculpting.

#35

damn right - no ctrl+z for one thing  You’re doing a good job with it though…I’d say the mouth’s not quite working at the mo… Keep it up - have you seen Joh Brown’s DVDs? they’re fantastic

#36

Thanks Magdalena:) I want to try next time something more “flexible” like supersculpey. Your works are awesome bye the way;)

#37

Hi Gregory! Great work, needless to say! :applause: Good to see you try so many media. What clay is that you are using?

#38

Hey ,

Thanks Anand and sorry for late reply. It’s self hardening red clay that I was using for this one. I want to try super sculpey but I have to find a store here that sells some.
Here’s my last digital painting sketch. I love colors of Toucans so I wanted to give it a try:

Hope you like it

Some other sketches after Kevin Chen’s tutorials and another head from imagination:

Hi…Gregory

Really enjoying your thread…Like that Toucan…Great colors in that piece.
You might give a hint of some feather edges on the neck area, and where it meets the beak…just a few sutle details here and there, would really add to it I think…It’s a piece that’s for sure worth pushing further…just my personal opinion though.
Looking forward to seeing more of your work and progress.
TAKE CARE
