SpiritDreamer - thanks glenn! not sure when i’ll be touching traditional paints at the moment. currently learning prisma color pencils at class. But i’ll always be doin digital sketches and maybe mudbox or zbrush sculpts here and there. those’ll be posted in my other threads though, unless they’re relevant to this one as well.

heres another. kinda like how this turned out except for the sloppy background. gotta do more o those since Im pretty bad at em. I would love crits and tips on backgrounds and fading things out.

Thanks for the heads up Rebeccak! As for my background, I originally took a multimedia diploma. The few 3d classess I had sparked my interests so afterwards I took an internship in a small post production house where I learned 3d. spent around 8 months as a freelancer in that place and worked with cgtalk members MichaelZHsee and kfc :stuck_out_tongue: good ol buddy’s o mine, extremely inspiring to be around. Lunch breaks learning zbrush, building monster heads, and sketching with a wacom lead me to decide that my love was in concept art and character creation (concept modeling), and comics :). I’m now at my 5th month taking an Illustration degree still doin a little 3d from time to time (learning mudbox and zbrush at the moment). I just Hope i’ll get a job with an awesome company doing awesome stuff when i graduate, crossin my fingers real hard :stuck_out_tongue:

Love your stuff by the way, you do beautiful sketches and paintings. Your pencil strokes are economic yet definitive and interesting at the same time (and thats something i really need a lot of work on). Maybe u can give a little tutorial on pencil techniques (the technical stuff), I don’t think i’ve seen any o those being done before. Well lookin forward to seein more stuff from ya, i’m off for classess

Hi there. Amazing stuff u got here. My favourite’s the old lady portrait; she just got truckloads of spunk and attitude. The portrait above that one is the runner-up.

My only critique is that this is supposed to b a sketch thread and your stuff are pretty much finished pieces,:D! Nevermind that, just joking.

Your post reagarding your background just got me insanely jealous!!! Art school is definitely one of my goals (distant,though). Must be great to b around ppl with the same interests as yourself.

Anyways, congratulations for sucha cool thread. I’m subscribing to it so I can keep up with your updates (hoping to learn “a thing or two”!!!:D).

Jose, I enjoy your work - I love work drawn with the basic raw tools - pencil and paper. Hey, when there’s a power outage, we at least will have our tools!

Very nice work! I’d be interested to know how long you tend to have to work on them to get your drawings this sort of level?

You appear to have quite a good skill for shading the figures in your drawings, so perhaps apply the same technique to your backgrounds? If you want to fade things out; rather than drawing background objects, you could look at how they are lit and use that as a guide for where to shade lighter and darker bits - hope that makes sense!

Andy - thz for droppin by! Well I don’t really know how to answer your question because we are all different. It depends on how you approach your learning. The quicker and easier you see and fix your mistakes the faster you improve. I’ve started around 6 months ago, but some of my friends here have been taught for much longer, and it shows in their skill. I’m really not that good, just a normal guy compared to the standards of the school, tons of way better people even at the lower semesters. Thx so much for the tips and I will try them out in my next drawings. cheers

Dorothy - I’m really glad you like my stuff. Nothing beats the feeling of pencil and paper eh? Although I really do enjoy working both digitally and traditionally equally.

ShinobiXXX - thz for the heads up Bruce! Just keep in mind that these are ofcourse all done from reference and the credit of the attitude of the old lady goes fully to her and the photographer that captured it. These are considered figure sketches actually, the only really finnished sketch is the one of the african american lady. The third picture I think. That was done almost 20 hours, so I’m still not really satisfied at the speed i’m workin at the moment. The rest of those are done at 3-6 hours each. Being around people with same interests and higher skill levels is a huge boost in inspiration, but the same feeling can be felt in a way as well when hanging around forums like this. I’ll be updating a few days later since my internet’s been disconnected at the moment. Not sure if I can teach you a thing or two as there are much more skilled artists around this forum, just look around. I know it sounds cliche’ but drawings all about mileage. Learn to analyze and correct your mistakes and you will improve faster.

Oh, the modesty :D! I meant u captured it well, cuz that’s an expression that has a lot of sudelties, which makes hard to draw and can easily be turned into another.

I can’t agree with you,there. Don’t get me wrong; forums are great. They’re pretty much the only kind of interactivity I get with other artists. But it’s not the same thing as being in the same physical space with other ppl an tossing ideas back and forth.
I had a group of friends in High School, we’d get together to come with ideas for comics and, in all honesty, that’s when my art skills took a significant leap. I wish I drew like that today :D.

ShinobiXXX, well yeah its true what you say about forums, i guess, its just not the same as being around real people, but it is kinda nice to get in touch with others from places far away from yours as well. Cheers for the comments buddy, take care hahah.

thanks razz, glad to hear you like em, still got a long way before I can relaly say i’ve made the pencil my friend hahah, lots of very talented classmates here, and its an inspiring and humbling environment.
