I was following your Jack sparrow wip,
it was looking nice when you start the face and the hand

but in my oppinion you already loosing patience when you continue the rest (hopefully I am wrong ^^)

#16

Good to see you back posting here again. What kept you so long? I like Sparrow’s wrap, the detail in it, well done. Tell me, do you always work this way? I mean, finish one part of the drawing and the move on to another?

New Painting.

Oil on 11"X14" canvas board

A still-life (possible for portfolio)

Im not much of a painter, this is only my 3rd painting…ever really.

#18

Hey Cernew, not a bad effort for your third ever painting, especially with oils, they’re such a different beast to coloured pencils. (Btw, i can’t believe that sparrow pic was prismas! I’ve never been able to get that density of saturation with them!) If you’re consdering putting it in your portfolio, I’d say if you get the chance to maybe go back and work on it a little more. The basics are definitely there, but with a little finesse it could be a nice still life. Even if you don’t have the original set up any more, you could always look up images, or buy some more fruit! I like the purpley tones in the grapes, nicely done, but the green plant (I’m guessing) is a bit hard to read. But a good start!

#19

Thanks Zephyri! Yea, my teacher told me today to add some more highlights to make it look less muddy. And I agree with about the plant.Im going to work on it this weekend and probably post an update Sunday or Monday.

I need help!

I want to start drawing or sketcing everyday, but I don’t know what to do or how to start.

Can anyone give me a starting point?

#22

Can anyone give me a starting point?

oh, let me try my maniacal malicious laugh!

muahahahHAHAHAHHar!

ok,

first of all, you got your self portrait hung in the Congress? How cool is that?!

tips:

 • don’t resolve on mad goals like doing one or even half an hour every day. That won’t last long. Something like 15mins will get you very far if you do it for one year every day!

 • get yourself a cup of coffee (or ice cream, or a 'burger, or a coke - it doesn’t matter. Coffee is more artsy… ) and sketch the people in the café (bar, street behind the window, market square). Their poses won’t last long, you have to be quick. No details, no frustration. Don’t do it for hours. A few minutes.

 • Do a sketchathon sketch. Find the sketchathon threads in the workshops section here, one for ref, one for posting. Time yourself. Takes only 15 mins. Nail the gesture down. No details, no frustration

 • have your girl-friend (room-mate, cat, brother) do quick poses of a minute or two each. Be quick. It’s fun. No details, no right, no wrong, no frustration.

 • Do all of the above with your left hand (or whatever is your weak hand). Guaranteed mess up! Internal censor and critic section in the brain is confused. Big fun - and surprises…

 • Whatever you do - post your stuff here! Immediate feedback will do a lot to help you keep your momentum.

Because after all, for the resolution you are looking to make, what you draw is not as important as how much you draw or, even more important, how regularly you do it. Find the playful side to things and keep yourself entertained with the things you do.

Enjoy.

Its been a REALLY long time since I posted. Since last time, I’ve started College at SUNY Purchase as a Visual Arts Major for Graphic Design. Im talking basic core classes: Drawing 1, Scultpeure1, and Design1. Every monday and wednesday, I go to Art Club, which is just a free 2 hour figure drawing session. I went a week or two ago for the first time and drew my first nude figure. I was really fun and Ive gone back every Mon and Wed since.

So Im gonna post all of them here to hopefully get feedback on them, since I know actually have figure drawing in this thing.

Im going to try my best to put them in the right order, but some may be off.

They are all done on 18 in X 24 in newsprint with either vine charcoal, charcoal pencil and/or cheap ballpoint pen.

Most of them were either 5, 10 or 15 minutes, i dont remeber which was wich, but it was my first day and i was experimenting and trying to get the hang of it.

The rest from that day.

#25

This is the next session.

A few gestures first then a few fives, then 10’s and 15 minutes.

Sorry for the bad photography, I dont have the best lighting or any space in my dorm.

#28

My first Drawing 1 assignment was to take a mug shot and blow it up using a grid. I had to treat each square as an individual abstract image, not a face. the original was about 4in X 6in. I enlarged it to about 13in X15 in.
(sorry for the glare, its graphite and didnt photograph well)

This is my first Sculpture 1 assignment. I had to sculpt my shoe out of wire with implicit line and volume. (I got an A+!!!)

Hey Bryan,

Recently had discovered your sketchbook here. Very nice and personal style you have. One of the greatest thing here in this specific board it´s the different styles I´m learning to represent the human form. That´s incredible.

I enjoy your colored pencils drawings (I didn´t se much around here) and your quick gestures are good. With time and pratice I´ll do less “lines” and more “forms”. I do prefer the ones with simple lines and shades.

But what´s really take my attention was your first scultpture assignment. What a curious piece of art. You´ve deseverd the A++. Thanks for sharing this image with us.

I don´t know if you going to put that in an exibithion (or something like that). But If you do, don´t forget to consider a Light source and the Shadows who´s casting by the wireframe. I think the design formed by the shadows add a lot for the piece.

Anyway. Keep it up your studies and keep sharing your art.

I was a bit surprized to read about the portrait, having to see each square of the grid as an individual abstract element. I understand it can be a good way to test one’s sense for values, but isn’t this exactly what an artist should try to avoid when using the grid?

The shoe is awesome! It shoes how one can turn a simple, everyday object into something very interesting with a bit of imagination. Lovely!

Agnoldo: Thank you VERY MUCH! I know what you mean about the lines. Im still very stiff doing it, but im starting to loosen up a little more. Ive been very aprehensive with my lines as if I draw the wrong line something really bad will happen. I have to start just going with the flow and just let it happen.

I aggree about the sculpture, I just took a few snapshots of it just for now. Im curious myself to see how the shadpws cast.

NR43: My professor isnt very clear, but that’s what he told us to do. I thinkn it was more or less a value study, but now I have to do a giant 36in X 24 in selfportrait using the same technique. Thank you about the shoe! My next sculpture will be to create a human form or an object humans can use out of cardboard using cubism as insiration.
