I think your work with a pencil is very nice, very good strokes and studies!

On this watercolor practice… you should not do this anime style strokes for the nose … this destroys your attempt on getting it real. Just place shadows for this strokes and it will be better.
I think you should leave this anime style behind you and try to do this anime character rendered realistic. I think this would be better than trying to give them a realistic color but with the typical anime strokes…

Do you know Gabrielle dell’Otto ? He is an great artists, he takes the marvel superheroes and renders them with a lot of realism. I think this would be something you should try yourself :slight_smile:

Hi …Vincere …:slight_smile: GREAT studies…:thumbsup:
On your realism pieces…really put extra effort into the eyes…lots of values in them…darks to lights…ending up with the lightest spot being the high light…When you are using color, it’s the same thing…lots of values…darker shades of the same color to lighter shades of that color…not just one shade, but many…You might try doing a master copy of your choise, in just gray scale, just to get used to the values and how they work to creat a sense of realism…best way to learn about values, is to really study a masters painting in detail to see how they used values to creat an illussion of depth…just make the painting that you decide to do a study of into a black and white/grayscale…put it on your screen, and put your canvas next to it on the same screen, and go for it…don’t use the color picker thing…just use your own judgement as to the values that are there…best way to LEARN…:slight_smile:

Hi Vincere,
Good work so far … uhm… on the potraits… do you have a mirror or anatomy book for heads? The lightning on your potraits / heads is sometimes very inconsequent and wrong. I don’t know how to tell you right what I mean so I think it would be the best to take a mirror, place a light in front of you and look where the shadows are … if you don’t have the chance I think I must find a way to explain it Oo

Spiritdreamer, I will make a study on a painting, although wouldnt it be better if i did a study out of a statue? since I’m working on greyscale for the moment, or perhaps it doesnt matter at all?. Thanks for the sugestion and your support, I’ll work on the eyes :slight_smile:

Hi…Vincere…:slight_smile:

You are better off doing a master copy from a painting to learn values to start with because the color values in the painting will translate to grey scale values when turned into black and white/grayscale in your computer…making it easier for you to study the value transitions.dark to light/light to dark in the painting…If you do your study from a statue, you will be working with just photographic shadows and lighting, which is not the same thing as a painting WITH VALUES which is what you are trying to learn by doing the study…Hope that helps some… :slight_smile:

I really dont know what is better, to use hard brush or soft brush, the master study I did it blending the hard edges with the soft brush, this one I did it the otherway, I started with the soft brush and blended with the hard edged one…:confused: maybe this belongs to the wip thread…

Hi Vincere,
I’ll do a paintover maybe later this day … but I think on this last one you have captured the light better ! Now try to use more brither values also for the nose … the nose is the part on the face where you have mostly some of the brightest reflections. Also the upper part of the top lip … you should put some light there … sorry I have not the time for an overpaint yet so I can only explain it to you :wink:

So I use both, hard brush and soft brush … it depends on what you need … the hard brush is for hard edges the soft brush for soft edges … you should use them where they are needed … and just use both :slight_smile: But I think it is better to start with the hard edge brush to block in the basic forms then blend the soft edges :slight_smile:

^^ I understand! well I tried to make it lighter, these was such a pain I really ruined the drawing (I thought it looked fine in the beginning with the soft brushes only) DX but I think I kind of fixed it now, I used both brushes like you said

I know there’s still somethin wrong with him but i can’t tell what DX!

I know i should post more anatomy studys, but this painting is really driving me crazy DX
Also i got eye surgery yesterday… :> I can see!

You might now go back and try that out on the DaVinci head study…kind of bounce back and forth between the two,…refining and learning from each as you go along…just a thought…:slight_smile:

I think you got it :slight_smile: Yes I would say all the shadows and light reflections are not totally correct but for me it works a lot better now! I think you should give the upper lip more shadow … the upper lip is mostly in shadow when the light comes from above :wink: Also inside the mouth should be some shadow, don’t you think? :smiley:

the face looks wonderful, i think the highlights helped drastically… i hate that when you cant tell whats wrong with a picture! drives me nuts lol. i do agree with the upper lip shadow, that will help out a lot, the only other thing i could name that may make it look funny is the width of the nose, it seems a bit small, either that or we need to see more of our left nostril, make it look like we really see the underside of it like we do the rest of the face :)!

Trunks, thanks ! I’ll work on those areas, also do you think I should shade more the cheek (his right cheek)? I think there may be something wrong there because it looks so diferent from the first sketch with fixed lightning that I posted :confused: or maybe is just me?

I learned today that shading with mechanical pencil isn’t very good, yeah these were done with that

you say its your 4th time sketching her and it still doesnt look like her, but i recognize the piece! the eyes look wonderful! fantastic structure on them :D!! the hands are extremely inspiring and look real good, makes me want to go and draw some of my own!

Yes I think you should give the right cheek some more shadow … as long as you are drawing digital you can also just try it our and no piece is going to be destroyed :smiley: So just give it a try :slight_smile:
Very good updates! I like all of the heads! Keep up doing this studies, I think they will help you to understand the human head better. It is great to see you thrwoing things without refrence in because this helps you to train your imagination and to see where you have to learn more :slight_smile:

I have “finished” the pic, I’m not going to keep working on it DX I’m just tired of it.

so I started another one, this time in colors…to work on skintone o_O, this is a girl from japanese cartoon, not done yet of course but i apreciate critique :slight_smile:

good work on your “finished piece” I still think you should have made the upper lip a litte darker :slight_smile: Guiding you was quite a pleasure :wink: No problem :slight_smile:

On you new one … I think you just have to do some more work … I could tell you like thousands things but maybe you are planing to change them so I’ll wait and check again when you update this piece. Just one thing: The right iris is not round … its an elipse in your piece.
