skeleton Detatches from skin when i save and exit file

#1

Hi there

I have modeled rigged and weight painted a character. I saved the scene as a .mb file and closed it for the day, chuffed that i rigged my first ever character(patting my self on the back in the process)

When I returned to the file to open it and do some more work the Skin had broken away from the skeleton. I have a rigged skeleton and the character is technically still connected to the skeleton(it detects i skin bound it and has to be detached from the skeleton to be re bound), it is still reading the input but it is not being effected by the rig.
Moving the ik’'s and the curve controllers I set up only move the skeleton
I have tried saving the rig before i paint the weight as well to make sure i didn’t mess something up there.

Any suggestions would be great? from all the tutorials i have followed they don’t say anything about the actual saving of a rigged character so i just assumed the scene would save with the the rigging the way I left it.

Cheers

Resolved. Had to delete the history on the character mesh. Thanks for the assist

Obviously something is not right here. Maya normally has no problems saving and reopening a mesh that is bound to a skeleton and has skin weights painted.

From your question your actual workflow is not clear to me, so it is difficult to pin-point what you have done wrong. I would suggest some simple trouble-shooting should help you narrow it down though.

In a new scene smooth bind a polySphere to a couple of joints. Save it. Reopen. Is it still skinned? Then paint some weights. Save it. Reopen. Is it still skinned? If that works it is reasonable to assume maya is working.

Then move onto your actual character. Try smoothBinding to a simple skeleton, with just a few bones. Save. Reopen. Still skinned? So mesh is good.

Try binding a simple mesh (polySphere) to your rig skeleton. Save. Reopen. Still skinned?

And so on.

At some point its gonna fail again, but if you have been methodical it will be obvious what is causing the failure.

I don’t know what it was but i deleted the history on the mesh that made up the character and the model saved. That was annoying but success in the end. Thank you for your help =D
