Simple scene trying for realism

#1

Hello all, i have been working on this scene for the last week or so. I was trying to create a very simple scene to see if i could achieve a photo real look to it. I was hoping for some feedback on what it is that might make this image look cg and how to make it look more real. Im pretty satisfied with the result, but i have been staring myself blind on this sa fresh set of eyes on this would be really nice.

Im almost done with this image but im hoping on feedback on this so i know what i should try to do, or not do for my next project.

It looks good. I reckon the concrete floor texture is too large in scale, maybe drop it by 30%. Bump map might be a little strong too. Other than that I can’t really see anything that could do with improving.

How easy was this scene to make?

If I was being brutal and slightly unfair  then I might say that the image is probably too easy for you. Your bedroom scene was quite complex and pushed your abilities, this scene not so much. You’ve done a great job here but you might want to aim for something that’s more tricky for you?

Keep up the good work!

Thanks for your post and feedback Miked, its always nice with some honest and “brutal” feedback

The scene was fairly easy to make, took me maybe 10 hours and chair probably took around 3 hours cause of the, bradied(?) seat, couldnt figure out a good way to make it so i made it “by hand” from splines which was a pain in the ass and took some time.

I sure will try something more challenging for my next project, this i made simply due to lack of time so i wanted something fast and not to difficult.

My next project will be an exterior house with woods surrounding, which for me should be very challenging, i have never done an exterior house nor any plants or trees before (think im gonna try and use forestpack lite for the trees, but im not sure what i should/can use for grass, stones, gravel, dirt and such?).
So that should be fun and frustrating

Yup, an exterior house surrounded with trees sounds sufficiently challenging. You could always stick the chair in the building to get double usage out of it. I’m afraid I can’t recommend any plugins for grass, gravel etc…

Best of luck!

Your scene does look realistic but imo might lacks shadows.
A quick test:

Your modeling and shading are good, but the different elements don’t seem to blend and i think it’s because it lacks shadows.

Thank you so much for your feedback and thoughts. A friend of mine also said that something looked a bit off due to the lack of shadows, so i definetly think the image could be improved with that. Dont think i will redo this now as this was just a quick image i did when i didnt have time to start something a bit more serious. Thank again for the feedback, i will keep it in mind for my next project

maybe you could add small pieces of rock on the ground, add small dents and damage to chair, pieces of dust, get some inspiration from Marek Denko closeup renders

Yeah, the floor could do with some pitting here and there; currently I feel the bump map is a little too low resolution and perhaps a tad strong for the kind of detail in it. Also, some fresnel reflection would increase realism.

But I think the biggest thing affecting the realism in your scene is the lighting and contrast. While our human eyes would see this scene in a way similar to how you’ve portrayed it, if it’s photorealism you’re after, then it wouldn’t. Remember, a camera sensor sees light differently to human eyes; the soft shadows in your render seem to be being cast from the window. However, the only way a camera would “see” a scene like this would be if there was significant light coming from additional sources, not only from behind the camera, but also from the sides. This would affect the shadows in your scene quite differently to what you’ve got. If the only source of light were the window, I’d expect to see a much greater contrast between the light and dark values.

Do you own a camera? If so, go into a room and, using spot metering on the camera, take a look at how the metering changes when you focus on an object in front of the window, as opposed to the window itself.

@Winside Thank you for taking the time to give me some feedback, great idea about adding small pieces of rock on the ground, i think i had that thought while i was working on this but somehow it slipped my mind i guess. I watched some of Marek Denkos work and that was some truly inspiring work to watch, thanks for the tips and ideas.

@leigh Thank you leigh for your comments and feedback, I will try and reduce the size of the floor texture and “strength” of the bump map and add in a bit of small stones. I think i know what you mean about the camera “seeing” it different. Im at work for the rest of the week so i dont have a camera here that i can try it out with, but i think i know what you mean.

I was going to leave this image as is, but i have been givin to much good advice and feedback now to let it be. I will try and work in the advice that has been given and post an update next week when im home and have access to the 3ds max files on my desktop computer.

For now i will keep working on my exterior as i only have my laptop with me at work
