Simple Life: Storyboards & Notes

#1

Pulled from the other thread for easier viewing.

OK here’s my boards, but like I said. I’m not going to do much more until the M&S is over. If someone wants to refine the boards or start working on a animatic that’s fine, I’ll give some additional feedback (time permitting). It looks like most of the other Mods pulled their work that was done already. I’ll see if I can’t find a copy of Roberto’s animatic that he made.

Reading from left to right and top to bottom …

[ul][li]Intro sequence/Titles/Credits - A series of beautifully composed images of the cubes in their environment. Animation of characters is minimal and they should just be “hanging out” doing nothing as to distract from the credits.[]After the credits end the camera fixes on a set of gray cube characters and our orange fellow walks into the scene from behind the others. He looks around a bit to see where he fits in the group as the others cast him a look behind his back (i.e. the cube at right might look him up and down as he’s turned away. When orange turns back the gray will snap his gaze away as if he wasn’t just checking orange out).[]Orange makes a move into the heart of the group and the others slowly back away from his position.[]There’s a little bit of a hesitant withdrawal before they all break out into a panic and run away from Orange.[]Orange POV as he looks at the others gathering together at the furthest most part of the room from him.[]Orange makes another attempt to be a part of the crowd and the others react in shock/terror. This stops Orange in his tracks.[]A bit shocked and surprised Orange looks on the others in bewilderment or a “WTF?” type of reaction.[]Realizing that he’s not wanted, he turns to sulk away from the crowd.[]Shuffles/drags feet as he mopes away to the other side of the room[](I added this extra gray one as comic relief in an otherwise downer scene.) The gray one is hanging out on the other side of the room kind of oblivious to what has happened thusfar. Seeing Orange shuffle into his area he is startled to find all of his other friends are huddled on the other side of the room. He (in a “oh crap!” sort of way) hurries off to meet with his friends.[]Orange finds a wall and begins to bang his head on the wall in frustration.[]On a down-stroke towards another head banging, he suddenly stops and bends back to look up at something that has caught his attention.[/ul]
[/li]
[ul][li]POV - Orange looks up at a circular opening in the wall that has an orange color visible that mimics his own hue.[
]Reverse angle looking down at Orange to show the task at hand. This is a pivotal portion of the story in which Orange realizes that this space on the other side of the wall is where he’ll most likely “fit in”. The height of the portal on the wall is to display that the task of getting from the gray world to the orange one isn’t going to be a small task.[]In a trail attempt, Orange jumps up and down a few times trying to get a peek into what might be on the other side of the wall.[]View from inside the hole, shows the top of Orange’s head as he desperately tries to get the right altitude to see.[]Confused, curious yet determined he pauses at the ground level debating his next move.[]Turning to look back, he begins to develop a plan of operation.[]He hops back about half the distance of the room and turns to face the opening.[]POV - Orange looks across the room at his goal for a brief instant.[]Then he burst into a run across the room towards his destination.[]With a charged leap he bounces himself up towards the portal high on the wall.[]But his aim is off and he smacks hard into the wall just to the left of his target.[]He hangs there for a brief moment and then slowly slides down the wall.[/ul]
[/li][ul][li]Orange slumps to the floor and looks as if he’s going to give up.[]But persistance is the key so he gets up and goes to the other side of the room for another try.[]Here he goes again! Isn’t he determined![]He slams into the wall again, and falls to the ground.[]The next four panels are a series of quick shots from the same camera angle showing Orange hitting the wall in different places and at different angles. He’s not giving up so easily.[]After the last hit we see him fall down towards the camera (worm’s eye view) in a slow motion display of defeat.[]He hits the ground hard very close to the camera’s POV looking up at the hole in the wall. Mockingly.[]He lays there for quite a while breathing heavily. Then lifts his head and looks over his shoulder at something that has caught his attention.[]On the other side of the room, the gray cubes have been watching this desperate endeavor by Orange and are mockingly laughing at him. When they realize Orange is looking at them. They stop and turn to pretend they’re not interested in whatever Orange is doing.[/ul]
[/li]
[ul][li]Orange (semi-defeated) gets up and has another long look at his seemingly impossible task.[]And then turns decisively and with determination towards the other cubes.[]POV - Orange surveys the crowd of gray cubes on the other side of the room (ignoring him).[]Finally, he makes one last trip to the other side of the room.[]But this time he doesn’t stop halfway. He goes all the way to the opposite wall and the gray cubes hurridly get out of his way when he approaches.[]POV - Orange turns to face the crowd of cubes now gathering in the center of the room. Above them, the orange portal looms in the distance.[]Taking a deep breath and gathering up every last bit of determination that he has, Orange bolts as fast as he can towards the gray cubes and the portal on the other side of the room.[]The gray cubes are startled by Orange’s sudden advancement on them.[]And in a panic they charge off towards the opposite wall in an herd-like effort to escape the quickly approaching orange oddity.[]A gray cube trips and falls to the floor sliding along behind the others, as Orange catches up to them. Orange jumps onto the fallen gray cube.[]Using the gray as a springboard, Orange vaults into the air above the pack of nervously retreating grays.[]Orange lands in the thick of the pack and begins to crowd surf them towards his destination.[/ul]
[/li][ul][
]Over the shoulder camera follows group of cubes as they run towards the hole & carry Orange on thier tops.[]Orange bounces up and performs a spectacular gymnastic maneuver bouncing from one gray to the other towards the front of the pack (flips and twirls would add to the character).[]Reaching the front of the pack (they’re still running) he hits one of the grays in the front hard and launches himself in a tight spiral towards the portal. The last gray springboard falls to the ground.[]Camera follows Orange as he spirals up overhead and towards the hole (in a Free Willy shot). He punches into the hole about halfway and after a brief pause we see the downed Gray slide into camera view along the ground.[]Orange wiggles and squirms, forcing himself and his square body through the round hole.[]The grays can only watch as Orange dissappears from their lives forever.[]Eventually they get bored and just slump off to doing whatever they were doing before Orange made his appearance in their world.[]Meanwhile on the other side … camera fixes on the portal looking back into the gray world then begins a slow pan down.[]It stops on our square friend laying on the ground, who is now in the shape of a cylindar. He gets up from the ground.[]Camera stays on Orange and doesn’t reveal the room (yet), as he first checks his new shape and then looks around the room. Then jumps in shock …[]The camera quickly zooms out to reveal the rest of the room and a population of spheres.[*]Orange slumps down realizing his mistake and new environment is no better than the previous gray world.[/ul]Fade out … the end.

I just searched my computer … I don’t have a copy of Roberto’s animatic.
Here’s some other stuff that I pirated from the Mod’s forum.

Mood painting by Lunatique
Notes by me: – The orange reflective lighting may be a bit too much. The idea is to isolate the character and the portal from it’s environment. The reflective color blends the two elements together too much. The story is about isolation, being different and trying to fit in.

Test render by Dave Black
Notes by me: – I like the subtle textures and it may be neccessary to add some slight texture to the characters (so they read better when turning). Not sure if I would add it to the wall surfaces or not though. I’d like to keep the environment really simple and plain.

Also, another thought is that I don’t want the lighting to come across as too depressing looking within the environment. This is a nice render, but it looks very “doom-n-gloom” which doesn’t fit the idea well. The principle is that it’s just a simple world. Not good or bad, just a place where these shapes live. The focus will be on the orange guy because he doesn’t fit in with his surroundings.

A discussion of the film at one of our MSN meetings that clarified a lot about some of the shots.
I hope the other Mods who where quoted below won’t mind.

Kaiskai - I don’t understand the panel after he’s popped through. The boxes are jsut leaving
Kirt - Well … the excitement of him being there is over
Kirt - it’s a “move along nothing to see here” moment
Kaiskai - ahh, I read it more as if they all darted away from the hole
Kirt - “Eventually they get bored and just slump off to doing whatever they were doing before Orange made his appearance in their world.”
Kaiskai - how shoul dthe spheres be acting when the camera reveals them? I mean I’m sure its a short shot, long enough forthe Cubes reaction to seeing them, sighing in disappointment and then transition or cut to black, but it they need to be doing something, yet not too active that they would distract form the cubes acting
Kirt - I think a slight movement away from the cylindar would be good enough
Leonard - Bounce
Mibus - just put them in a room and let them sort themselves out
Mibus - a sort of part chit-chatting is what i’d thought
Leonard - I wonder if the movement of the balls and cubes should be different
Mibus - *party
Leonard - The balls bounce
Kirt - just so that they acknowledge him there and then recoil away from him as the gray ones did before
Leonard - The cubes sort of squirm
Leonard - The problem with rolling is that the movement might not be ‘apparant’ enough
Kirt - cubes hop around though … like Veggie Tales
Leonard - As in, the sillhoutte doesn’t change
Leonard - Ah
Leonard - So the cubes hop
Kaiskai - roll, easier for animators considering they are balls
Mibus - they can’t walk?
Kirt - Yeah the hopping is better cause the movement will translate better with the squash and stretch
Kaiskai - ahh leaonarddbeat me to it
Mibus - i kinda pictured the cubes walking
Mibus - (like someone with baggy pants?)
Kaiskai - bounding is how I thought of it, but waddling is easy enough to aniamte as well
Kirt - They walk too … page one panel 3 - they would walk or waddle away
Kirt - page one panel 9 & 10 - Orange shuffles his feet across the room
Kirt - The waddle/walk would be better for less active movement … depressed, unsure, bored, etc.
Kirt - the hop has a little more life in it … curious, excited, determined
Kaiskai - I have to say Kirt, you did a great job interms of shot compositions, they are all very effective. One i could see changing though is when he firstspots the Hole and we get to see it. Our camera stays failry dormant throughout which is good, but I think this is a great spot to shoot him looking up from behind him (notlikewe are missing facial xpression) and then have the camera tiltup slowly
Kirt - page 4 panels 9-12 - are very animated hops. energetic and spirited
Kaiskai - and pull back, to reveal the hole at thetop, and the cube still at the bottom of the shot
Kirt - page 2 panel 1 ? - that’s supposed to be the top of his head that you see as he’s looking up. Not really apparant in the drawing but he’d tip his head back as the camera panned up
Kaiskai - No I like that panel, its panel 12 on page 1
Kirt - or even better continue the head tip back from the previous shot
Kirt - oh
Kaiskai - I think instead of a cut, if panel 12 was shot from behind him
Kaiskai - so the camera could pull back and tilt up to reveal it
Kirt - well … that was supposed to be just a break in his action. He was banging his head on the wall prior to and then stops when he notices the hole
Kirt - if we shoot it from behind … the head banging wouldn’t be as effective
Kirt - panel 12 is really just an ending of panel 11
Kaiskai - itrue
Kirt - then a quick cut to the next page
Kirt - and him bending back to look up
Leonard - (FYI I’m pretty happy with the storyboards - so don’t mind me if I just read what u all have to say about it)
Kaiskai - I’m pretty much done in terms of suggestiosn too, last one, is that we should have some sort of shotof him while coming thruogh the hole form the orange side to help distinguish thathe is turning into a cylinder, while our shots are fairly clear, its not an instant connectino that oh, this cylinder was our cube
Kirt - I thought about that …
Kirt - had originally planned on having him coming out the other side, but was afraid it would look too much like a poopie
Leonard - Hah
Kirt - figured the pan down to his location would establish that it was indeed the same character
Kaiskai - I mean the shots as they are make it pretty clear, but there is a lot of time after he’s gone through the hole for us to figure that outbefore the stories done
Kaiskai - haha
Kirt - seriously though … is it necessary or is it just another bit of info that helps the story
Kirt - if the audience can figure it out without having to explain it that way … I’d rather not do that shot
Kirt - it will be forever remembered by me as the poopie shot
Leonard - I think leave the poop shot out

OK, well it looks like we could bring together people who signed up for storyboarding, concept art and screenwriting in order to do these categories:

2D Animatic/Pre-vis - The storyboards are complete. However there is still lots of work that can be done to create an animatic. The animatic needs to be done before the 3D models are done and ready to be animated. This will help break down the timing into managable bits for the animators to work from. I imagine the whole film to run under 5 minutes, but other than that the timing of each scene has not been broken down adequately.

[ul]
[li]Which program to use to produce the animatic?[/li][li]How will we communicate with one another for it?[/li][li]Will each of us work on one particular area of the animatic and then meet up for crits?[/li][li]Primary focus is timing and character personalities[/li]
2D Layout Artist - Layouts are also needed to clarify the camera placement and movement for the film. In the beginning sequence (first panel of the storyboard) I briefly describe the title sequences but there is only one image. Any 2D artist available can begin making these layouts. I’m going for an almost abstract feeling of the cubes in an environment with lighting and shadows creating interesting compostions for the opening titles to be displayed. Correct and refine other scenes as well (the jump to the hole is pretty weak IMO).
[/ul]
[ul]
[li]Photoshop for the layout artists.[/li][li]Primary focus is the camera position and atmospheric looks. [/li][li]Will liase with the texturers and lighters- see whether they can produce the look we are aiming for.[/li][/ul]Will do this *after * the animatic- first layout the story and fix up any loose ends (there aren’t really any, just minor nitpicks) This will prevent having to go back and start again if the pre-vis people decide to change something.

We should post up a definitive list of people working on the project-- will reduce confusion once everyone knows who’s doing what.

The storyboards have been updated with scene numbers. Use these: [ul][li]When starting a new thread to indicate in the title which scene you are working on (animators, layout, pre-vis, lighting, camera, post, etc.)[]To help identify assets used in the film. If different rigs are required for certain scenes, lighting changes, camera changes, scene files, render frames.[]On filenames.[*]Wherever else appropriate to keep things as organized as possible.[/ul]
[/li]
The first frame is labeled 000-010 because I wasn’t sure how many different camera cuts we’ll use when showing the titles. I’m sure it’ll be less than 10 (probably more like 5). We’ll figure that out as we go through the pre-vis steps.

Sample thread titles:

Layouts: Scene 010-020
Animatic: Scene 014
Lighting: Scene 028
Animation: Scene 031a-031e

This will help identify parts of the film that are currently being worked on and allow Theresa to assign missing pieces to other people. When a WIP is complete or has final approval I will change the thread title to something like this:

OK - Layouts: Scene 010-020

This will allow us to progress on certain scenes while others are still in progress. Any questions?
