Showreel Critique required

Hi,

I am looking for some feedback on my showreel. What do you think of it? What can I improve? It is a collection of my recent works. Give me some feedback. Some credits on the circus stuff go to my buddies, Robert Uhlemann and Roxana Vasilescu. I want to show a broad range of skills regarding cg production and we want to use the reel to promote our cg services. Have a look:

I can’t even evaluate your showreel because the streaming on the website is so inadequate. I don’t know what the issue is, but maybe you need a better web host. Just so we can evaluate the reel, maybe you should put it on vimeo or youtube.

Thanks for the hint. Probably because it is a host based in cologne, germany. And I noticed that the website flash stream requires lots of cpu or gpu ressources (or both). Here are two mirror links:

Much better stream on Vimeo, but the other one hangs up.

There’s still stuttering and it’s not a streaming issue. I don’t know if it’s an effect you’re going for like slow motion with motion blur or something. Maybe it’s a transcoding issue or changing framerates or scaling clips in the video editor. What compositing and video editing software did you use?

Anyway, regarding the content itself, I really like the haunted circus stuff. It reminds me of Ray Bradbury stories. Great textures, lighting, set design, modeling, and atmosphere. I wanted to see more of the 2D house with green and blue sky. Good concept with the opening/closing and the play symbol on the portal that matches your logo. I like the music.

I guess you have some difficult decisions finding a balance between showing only the very best and trying to demonstrate the range of services you provide. The inclusion of some weaker pieces could have a negative effect, unless it’s being seen by a customer looking for something similar.

I think editing is an underrated art and you could put some more work into putting the clips into a better sequence, considering pace and emphasis to best showcase your strengths. You’ve got some great stuff there and I just think you can do a better job presenting it. Editing is a creative process.

I’m sorry if I sound arrogant or something. I’m just trying to help you out with my objective impressions because I know how hard it is to get people to critique your work.

Thanks for the critique. As for the stuttering issue, I guess you mean (mainly) the camera move along the scrolls. I don´t like it as well. Seems I have to check the lags again and fix it. I thought its just computer performance or something since it sometimes works and sometimes makes trouble.

Hm, well, yes this is the price for showing a broad range. I think I remove the blue mogfx stuff. I spice the car up a little with a real scene and little animation. Moreover, I am going to remove the particle text. That should make it faster and more focused.

Some people already mentioned the chaotic editing. Well, I like it but maybe I give it a try and organize it a little.
