hmm…yeah modo is a pretty nice Tool for modeling…but I would probably give you the advice to wait for more updates of the version…
modo has a very nice UI, and it is easy to customise and to find your way around…
and obviesly some nice tools that lightwave dont have.
However… I still think that Lightwave feels faster when working with subdivision surfaces
and theres of course a huge amount of plugins backing up Lightwave modeler.

I find it kind of funny that up until a few months ago some of you LW guys weren’t even using SIlo. Wonder what changed your minds…
I know I was using Silo as an alternative to modeling in LW since it shipped and I didn’t see any of you LW’ers around back then. So let me get this straight… It’s ok to use Silo over modeling in LW… nice cheap app, that’s great value, but has almost no UV or materials support, can’t do morph targets that are compatible with endomorphs, nor save to a native .lwo format? That’s just a bit suspicious if you ask me.
No digs on Silo intended because I think it is a rocking app, and I’d recommend it in a heartbeat if price is an issue. I know it has a good future too. But as a LW user Modo has been a dream come true. It improves on Modeler in every way and has become my primary modeling program. If Modo had some kind of bone support (preferably like Mirai) I’d be all set, because that’s pretty much the only reason I use modeler now (I don’t like using Layout’s bones, so skelegons are my only option).
My advice on this would be to NOT take the advice of anyone who has no experience with Modo. There are plenty of videos on the Lux site to base a solid decision from if you are an experienced modeler. All the tools and workflow features are illustrated nicely in short clear presentations. If you cannot make such a decision from that, then maybe modo isn’t for you and you should stick to a lower price range.
Jedimaster: You have a complete features list, plenty of videos on the Lux website to show them in action… I was just wondering… what do you expect from people using Modo and people using another package?
Personally I guess, hope that people who bought Modo know why they chose it… on the other hand, people who haven’t really taken a close look at it may easily find any reasons why you shouldn’t buy it.
You could let this thread going on forever… you’ll end up having a lot of users telling you why you should or why you shouldn’t buy Modo.
At the end, it won’t really help you but get you more and more confused.

Modo is a young software so far, but i think it’s worth its price. and it will be worth even more as time passes.
when i talked about Modo and Lw in my comparison, that’s the current situation, in wich Modo takes advantage of being young over Lw modeler with several good things: modern structure, expanadability, good UI, n gons and edges, well tought selection system, and modelling toolset and so on.
and at the same time needs some of the great advantages that Lw modeler has with its plugs and that only a bit more time of development will bring for sure.
even if it’s not SO distant from Lw modeler now, it doesn’t mean it will be not very evolved as time passes.
so, if you have the money and like modelling go for it, because it will keep evolving and getting better in time for sure. also because that’s what we expect fom Lux guys.
also, SDK is not avaiable now. but when it will be avaiable, cool plugs for modo will start popping up. 
lw 8 so far is not so different from lw7.5 and you’ll be able to upgrade in the near future as well, if you need it for rendering and animation.

I find it interesting that certain people who have not used it have such strong anti Modo opinions. I also find it interesting that individuals who have had some very nasty things to say about Lux and Modo and the developers all seem to be associated with each other and all seem to spout the exact same mantra.

Gwot, I do not compare LW to Modo, I am still a LW user. But this thread is comparing modelers… not complete 3D packages like LW, Maya or Max.

Bottom line, never said Modo is a bad tool, I am definitely watching Lux to see where it goes, but right now… IMO for 99 dollars if I were just looking for a modeler, I would pick Silo over Modo, LW, or XSI.

The original question was if he should buy modo, or upgrade lw. If you’re hesitant about modo, try out some other modelers like a few of us have recommended already. Silo, Zbrush, or Wings3d (which is free). Modo would probably work best with LW since it saves the models in the native LW formats, but I know a lot of LW users have been using Silo with no problems. Or you could just upgrade LW, lol. So many choices!

Well, I’m playing Doom3 right now and although it’s a technical tour-de-force, the game play is less than stellar in my opinion - extremely claustrophobic environments with very little room to maneuver, it has a very contrived haunted-house style scare tactic - there’s always an Imp spawning in the area you just cleared.
Half-Life 2 was much better all around although, I have to admit, the ending was a bit cheesy. The environments and vehicle designs were extremely well done. How about those striders, gun ships and troop transports - WOW! The only thing that was irritating was having to connect to Steamer’s online server.
But, of all the first person shooters I’ve played within the last six months - the most memorable was Pain Killer. I can understand why it won First Person Shooter of the Year in Computer Gaming World. It had the fastest engine, most innovative weaponry and jaw-dropping beautiful levels…

i love modo! it’s the best modeler i’ve used. it’s the easiest to get modelling in and has all the tools i need and they are easy to get at. it has my vote for best 3d program.
I wonder why there can’t be in depth discussions on software, comparing the different heights and lows without people getting offended. What better way to learn about a software before buying it.

I don’t think I’ve ever once participated nor read from the sidelines a discussion where I could have learned anything unbiased from participating users. The worst contribution you can make to a discussion on software is not knowing the software that is being discussed.
The best contribution you can make, especially to someone who really wants to know, is to suggest trying everything that is available and make your own comparisons. Unfortunately not a lot of people seem to appreciate that answer, as it tends to involve putting in some effort on their part.
This problem comes from the fact that actually not every user can make his own opinions about an app easily and in a short time. every app is good, if you know how to use it efficiently.Now, this requires some time indeed.
the question is : how much time u need to learn it? how much efforts?. if time is not so huge and efforts are not very huge as well,compared to another app, then, the app is more user friendly, at least in some areas, or at least suits you better.
that’s why often people tend to ask expert users what they think.thewy believe all good users can give them a corect and balanced answer. but often, even experts are biased as well, because they know really well one app.the one they like.
the answer try the apps by your own is good, but some honest advice not based on software wars can be better sometimes.
Incidentally, a good thing luxology use to say is that they want to listen their customers, so that the app, will evolve following their indications. also they tend to say that ergonomics and ease of use are very important. learning curve too.
This is true and a good thing to hear, that’s why i hope they’ll develop more and more with the animator in mind.
