Guys, this has gotten a bit snippy. Here’s my take as a LW user, Maya user, Modo user and pretty experienced animator (over 10 years now, dude…I’m getting old…).
Buy Silo - seriously, it’s $100 bux, what do you have to lose? If you don’t like it you’re out a few nights hard drinking worth of $$ and you can still buy Modo.
Something to keep in mind though, if you really want to make an investment in your future don’t think of Modo as just a modeler - it’s a window to a whole new package. I’m sure Silo is a fine program but I don’t think the Silo guys are going to be releasing a world class DCC program in the next few months (or however long it takes Luxology). Once you know Modo (and it’s so easy, believe me) you will have a head start on what’s to come. It may not be the ‘be all end all’ of Modelers (or Renderers or whatever may come) but it’s pretty damn good and will be competing with the top 3 programs right out of the gate. Luxology has assembled a very impressive staff of programmers with a looooong history and proven track record in this industry.
Being around as long as I have it’s funny to me when people complain about the price. If you’re a pro. you will make it up on your first job, if you’re learning and are serious stop and think what people pay for a law degree or even just a B.A. or something similar. It’s an investment in your future, keep that in mind. If I had bought Caligari Truespace instead of LW way back when just to save a few bucks my professional life would have ended up much differently. Maya was $40,000 when it first came out and it was buggy as hell. I have an Indigo Extreme in my closet that cost more than a Corvette. Prices have come down so much it’s not really the limiting factor anymore.
But if you’re just a hobbyist and money is tight - get Silo (or just go drinking : ) )
later,
Greg
