Should i get modo?

#1

i have seen modo in person and it is quite impresive. i was thinking about picking it up seeing how i can get a full copy for the upgrade price of lightwave.

but i still just cant justify getting it becaues lightwave already has a pretty good modeler. if anyone else has both lightwave and modo, what are some reasons i should join your ranks. or should i just upgrade to LW8?

thanks.

if all u do is modeling, buy modo, if u need also texturing and rendering and animation, upgrade to lw8, for sure we’ll see some other updates before Lw9 comes out, thing seem to be improving well.

It’s a tool. For what it costs, one could consider other tools, as well.
XSI would fit in that category, too.

If you have the bucks, want it, and see that it can offer you something you want, who are we to tell you do or don’t need it?
If the tools you have don’t get you what you want, is it the tool or your skills? Will a new tool improve your skills or just offer you another set of tools of which to not to utilise to their great potential?
I find it a pricey option for all that’s available in todays 3D world.

I agree that it looks great, but the price doesn’t justify it.

Silo will give you a lot of what LW is missing, in terms of modeling, for a much lower price.

I haven’t found many limitations in LW’s modeler that really hold me back, so I’m not sure if I would ever really consider spending more money to fix problems I don’t have =)

HELLER SIG, Michael!!
So true… so true… :hmm: :argh: :bounce:

I want to never change it, though. :applause:

I dunno. There’s something to be said about letting someone else do the accounting and the sales and the cleaning and whatnot, that way you get twice as much actual work done.

Most days I’d rather be animating than sitting on the phone long distance trying to track down a cheque.

On the other hand, what other job lets you show up at noon, in your underwear, and monitor auctions in World of Warcraft on a second computer?

It’s a toss up =)

I’m pretty much done buying all new software every time I have a problem, though. Watching my money has forced me to become far more forgiving of workarounds and trying to think my way out of problems rather than buy my way out.

#7

yeah ur right, i have more important things to spend my money on. i havent hit a problem in LW that i couldnt model, becieds ide get bord fast if i couldnt animate. i think i know what ill be spending my tax return on

thanks guys

There is a forum to ask this question.

There is a forum for “should I buy modo?” questions? lol

modo is an incredible tool - once you start using it you will not want to ever open modeler again. You will think modeler = yuk.

Features that I appreciate are:

fast openGl - (LW has very slow open GL)
snapping
workplane
macro recording
customizability
Maya navigation
interface

for me, workflow is a big deal and modo helps out big time. If you have not yet, watch all of the videos on Lux’s site - if that does not convince you, stick with LW.

My oppinion: I have now both: LW and Modo. With LW i have been a long time and its really strong.

I cannot use Modo to do real work: wich is architectural modeling based on AutoCad drawings.

And reason why is: I cannot perl very well. I can read the perl script and understand what it does, but to write my own: takes a time to learn.

With LW i can write my tools in LScript, wich looks much more cleaner and easyer to read.

Now i see only possibility to hope that Modo-Makers do this for me: that they listen to the clients of their software.

Amen

As stated before I just wish we could use higher res background images in modo. For high level techincal work taken straight from blueprints without the ability to use HIGH res bg images that work could become quite impossible.

But really modo IS a great program :-D.

#13

But remember, once you buy Modo you can NOT resell it. So make sure it is something you really want/need.

#14

If I were just looking for a modeler, I personally would use Silo, it is an amazing modeler…

#15

What are you calling high res???

No problems using high res imges here at all. Modo handles BG images MUCH better th LW.

#16

What are the differents between modo and other application??
Modo only can be used wif LW?

#17

see this thread,

Cheers.

The maximum image resolution that openGL can display is 1024x1024. If you want to go higher than that, you’d have to get some kind of DirectX viewport.

I know this thread is now moved to the modo board, so I don’t want to step on any toes…but i think that LW’s modeler is rock solid…I have busted out some insane models lately, and breeze though them in Modeler…could be my fimiliarity with the program…but I think that if you go searching for a “miracal” program that will make it all easyer you will only be let down…I’m not sure if this even pertains to this disscussion here, I haven’t read the whole thread yet…so excuse my “foot in mouth disease” if this is un-relevant…

…I should add that I have not tryed it yet…only wtched the videos and read threads like this…)))))

I find it humorous that of those responding here about Modo’s worthiness are people who fall into three basic categories.

  1. People whohave never touched Modo and are just making the presumption that it can’t hold up or that people will be disappointed.

  2. A group of people responding who clearly have a very personal agenda here that is not meant in the best interest of everyone involved. Either for their own personal business reasons or groupie loyalties.

  3. People who actually bought the program and are very pleased and excited with it.

In each of the first two cases, both are sides who haven’t used Modo, are refuting comments from people who did purchase and have been using the product.

Not sure how one can arrive at so specific a conclusion without having tried the program.

Points to consider:

the popular complaint is it is too expensive, “get Silo for 100.00” uh huh.

For anyone familiar with LW, Modo is very simple to adjust to. Contrary to comments being made, Modo resolves many workflow issues with LW. It also adds a very useful set of tools that LW doesn’t have. Does it solve problems? sure does. Claiming LW doesn’t have any issues is utter nosense and some of the people making those claims really need to take a step back and be honest with themselves.

I saw elsewhere that Modo was like having 100 tools lined up neatly and well organized on pegs in your workshop, while LW was like having 150 tools in disarray, all over your table, in drawers and in the back of your truck.

It was probably one of the best comparisons and most accurate I have seen yet.

And lets be clear here, I don’t dislike LW. I have several licenses purchased of it. But it isn’t perfect, it isn’t the Holy Grail and it most certainly is really lacking in modern functionality.

I bought Modo after getting to see it in action a number of times, and have not regretted the purchase at all. In fact I almost exclusively use Modo for modeling these days.

has nothing to do about brand and everything to do about tools and workflow.
