Short Film Collaboration: Discussion and Concept development

Love the sketches, Bardakos. Here’s a more of a high-tech skydiver idea but with some suggestions of a WW I biplane fighter. There could be more gadgets as Taron suggested.

#182

These designs are great, but ultimately we just need an interesting skydiver, a plane, a skyline for the basics to be met.

#183

i now i should have kept it more simple but i was having fun
so here is another more sci-fi version of the plane for no reason at all

i think that the patched metals on the coating of the plane would be nice…

i think that chikega’s post with the gadgets wwi etc is to blame…

This might give you all some ideas:

Maybe it’s just me jumping too early – but I’m starting to feel like this project is lacking strong enough leadership to get this project beyond just making a bunch of noise on a thread.

#186

Hehee. Well, the first thing that’s missing are goals. Or the second, if the leader is to set the goals.
Is the goal to play with displacement and more realistic rendering attributes? ie realistic skin, wind on cloth effects?
Or to get a rigged character in the hands of the community, to create animation sequences around the concept of a skydiver?
Or is the goal to generate a coherent fil as a messiah showcase vehicle?

From the various facets and interests from the comments here, you can see that there are fairly divergent expectations. For myself, I’m having fun doodling when I have the time - and enjoy seeing what others doodle. If I were developing a concept, I wouldn’t doodle before having defined the above.

In my opinion PMG needs to create its own forums like Zbrushcentral and Luxology’s forums to allow for such collaberation to take place as we can’t do it here on Ctalk. Its too hard. I think first and foremost what we need to do is simply our goals of the short (meaning we don’t have to have such a great story, just a simple one). The point of this is a short to boast interest in messiah. Messiah in its hay-day as a plugin for lightwave had a much greater user group then it ever did as a standalone package, we need to some how draw some of that interest back. Its obvious we have the conceptual talent, the technical talent and enough interest to do it.

btw, on a side note. Today is Taron’s birthday.

#188

Happy birthday Taron.

#189

Happy Birthday buddy! I hope you take some time today to chill and not boot the computer.

#190

What tools are missing with CGTalk that would make a collaboration project like this easier?

#191

Great sketches dobermunk and bardakos! I love the toon look. Great style!

With all of that in mind. Wouldn’t it be in PMG’s interest to keep the forum and this films progress in a PUBLIC location to GET the attention you are suggesting.

Now look at this! I am three weeks away on vacation and you decide to turn over the messiah world. Next time wait till I am here!!!

I have a little practically unused forum on one of my webservers. I could switch it to english and rename the forum categories (and maybe replace the banner with a messiah image). Tada! Finished is a preliminary forum. And if some people decide to donate a bit to the hosting costs, we could even use it as long term forum.

Check it out in its current form: http://www.softwaretraining4u.de/forum/

I don’t think you’re too early - I had the same feeling right after that first bold post

What doesn’t work:

  • “Freedom” Let a bunch of VERY different people decide about everything and nothing gets done.
  • “Save the world” The world doesn’t care to be saved
  • “Selforganisation” Well, it works, but how long did the evolution take (outside the US I mean, where it was created by the “government” in 7 days)?

What works:

  • Someone presents a concept - and others add to that, but it is maintained by the initial poster. Bardakos did fantastic concepts IMO. I love that plane and the guy…
  • Someone does a basic model - and others can add detail or improve it.
  • Someone does a rig - and others are welcome to work on it further.
  • Someone does the basic render setup, then the individual scenes can be improved on that basis.

It is all about commitment of individuals and just start working - not everybody waiting for some “gods”. There are none. Just people learning and improving.

What also doesn’t get you anywhere is talking about technical stuff. What should that “other” forum do that CGtalk can’t? Why on earth should there be “private” areas in a community project? Why buy a new domain? Keep it simple stupid and open:

  • Set up a main thread here on CGtalk where the basics are discussed. Create additional ones when needed.
  • Use Email, IM, IRC, Phones, Smokerings, whatever to communicate.
  • Many people have a webserver anyway if larger files are to be transfered - but this isn’t terrabytes of data. Even with all the large AoN and TLHPro Docs and tons of big images I post here, my monthly traffic is quite moderate… And RAR etc. does a good job in compressing stuff…

It can be done. Just stay down to earth.

Cheers,

And we are going to need thomas to keep sticking it to us!

Well I think this project isn’t moving because the person who suggested it isn’t running with it. Also I think we are all busy doing our own stuff or working to devote much time to this. I am still game to put effort towards it, but the person running this thread needs to start establishing things.

Unfortunately socialism doesnt seem to work good in film projects

Anarchy on the other hand could be more creative but by 99% will lead to a failure…

this thing needs a Dictator…

some may call him producer

but i agree with that for the moment one thing to do is find a place, thread, mailing list …
then small steps and maybe result will come…

what will definately come is fun, experience, disorder
(mental and biological, 2 much coffe, lack of sleep )

It sounds much fun and letsgo for it…
i feel that with such a moto many stuff can be done…

when we have a proper way of ineracting then we should talk about details
the script the storyboard models shaders renders …etc etc etc…

#197

Bardakos it was fun doing concept stuff with you. It doesn’t look like this will come to fruition anytime soon. Unless the person who suggested the idea gets things going in a simple way.

#198

And me!?!
I had fun too! Bardakos’ crazy planes, and your pics!

If anyone is interested in working on a film with more direction, I’ve got a few ideas I could post. And I’m sure you guys do too - so instead of saying “that was that” we could post a “director’s board” or “dictator’s board” if you prefer. Ideas are pitched and teams formed. Maybe reels, too.
Interest?

#199

Yeah, with all that positive energy it would be a pity to have the project end like that. :banghead:

It is true that such a project needs some firm creative director. Therefore I would suggest that anybody having an idea for a short film just posts its own “Dictator’s thread” where he can give the main direction, with others eventually joining in. It should be in the responsibility of the dictator to keep the project running. :deal:

I would be glad to offer my help in any kind of project.

I’ll post a thread later.

@suricate: How did your cockroach film turn out?
