Well,

Digital Fusion seems to be the big wave right now over shake. Chris at CMI studios also saying that shake sucks when put next to Digital Fusion. Try both. I find it hard to get help for shake but I bought it. Thats what I have so thats what I am going to learn…

Good luck.

well, shake is pretty good once you get the feel of it. if your comming from nothing else you should be fine, but people like me whove messed with combustion will be lost at first

the keylight keyer is VERY advanced this time around. it used to just be in AEFX it was stronger, but seems to be updated here

i really like it, but it has no built in FX like particles or anything lilke that, which all require the use of a 3D package…but thats fine, since 3D particles rule over 2d

not to meniton making custom plugins and scripts isnt too hard at all

The software is not really relelvant for beginners. I would say learn the concepts (read “The Art and Science of Digital Compositing” over and over). I personally like the node based approach of shake, but some people prefer the stack of After FX or Combustion.

I would suggest reading the Brinkman book, picking up the Apple Pro Training book with the Shake demo in it, and giving it a whirl.

i use shake at school and its a great tool. i have been trying the combustion demo and i like it. i like the fact that they also have node view somewhat like shake. i have a question i see shake 4 works with red hat 9, does anyone have an idea if it will work with other versions of linux.
anyone know if there is an academic version for shake. i noticed they mentioned something like that on apples site, but i couldn’t find any info on it.
also any idea on commercializing the student version of combustion.

any info will be greatly appreciated

IIRC it can run on other distros, but RH is whats supported.

#7

i never understand why red hat is supported, in my experience everything runs smoother under suse !

#8

Probably because Red Hat was the first major distro that was corporate and supported via a company. This is legacy stuff. It was running on Linux before it was running on Mac.
