Shader node question?

In the manual it states that the falling inputs are not active on the full shading node:

Direct Light - Temporarily inactive
Indirect Light - Temporarily inactive
Int Volume - Temporarily inactive
Ext Volume - Temporarily inactive

Is this still the case? And if not, what do they do. I can kind of guess.

I assume that direct and indirect light inputs control the effect of both on the objects shading. And that Int and Ext volume are controlling the density of an objects volume.

They never worked and maybe they never will - I have no idea.
