Hello. I am sorry for my English. I have recently started to study the rigging and character animation in Maya and ran into a problem. I can not set up legs of character so to avoid unrealistic movements of legs in different directions. Problematic place in bending of legs in different directions occurs in the hips. What are the solutions to this problem exist except blendshape?
Set up bending of legs
I guess you are referring as problematic to the geometry deformation not the actual transformation of the rig nodes. If that is the case I think there are several ways to improve the deformation.
First you should check if the hip rotation pivots are located properly within the geometry. For hips you should try to bring closer to the surface this pivots (that means make skeleton hips wider).
Second you could use corrective nodes (joints or locators or whatever) that should be driven by the thigh joints. You can add several driven keys to this nodes to compensate volume loss or any other deformation problems.
If the corrective nodes doesn’t provide enough resolution for your corrections you should probably add a collection of blend shapes, whose weight should also be driven by the thigh joints rotations.
