Select verts "through" faces?

#1

I’m attempting to use image planes to get going on a model of a figure in Wings. I work in wireframe so I can see the image planes and the components behind other components, but with Wings’ method of selecting, I can’t select a single vert that is behind a face, nor can I box select it, because apparently a box selection must start outside an object.

Does anyone know of a way to force Wings to select a component directly beneath the mouse cursor?

If not, what workflow do you guys use when using image planes? I’d like to get away from them, but for now, I need them for basic proportion.

I know I could just rotate around and select the component and use the hotkeys to get back to the plane view I was using, but there must be a faster way. I’ve also already thought of using multiple geometry windows, but I’d really like to keep modeling in one window since I’ve experienced that freedom in Wings.

Difficult, aren’t I? I’d really appreciate any feedback or ideas.

Try this:

View wireframe, vert mode (ortho as well, maybe?)
Press and hold shift
Marquee around required vert(s), keep LMB pressed
Release shift
Release LMB

Any use?

Not associated with above, but something else I sometimes use:

If working in View XYZ, ortho (single view) and don’t want to tumble model and you want to move elements that only have one end visible, - like an edge, say.

Select visible vert of edge
press e
Deselect unwanted edges (eyeball info display, top left)
Move (or whatever) remaining edge.

Only a simple example but can use similar ‘selection spread’ method for various things -

eg Getting the geom upto the correct edges separated by a zero width bevel (stages 13, 14 first strip below)

You do not need to keep the Image planes close to the mesh,in fact, put them far back and switch the camera to ‘Orthographic’(hotkey ‘O’ or ‘P’ I never remember) so they never are in your way.

You’re going to have to get used to rotate the view around the model so you can inspect the silhouette and make sure it is NOT shaped like a V(happens alot if you use only the XYZ viewports).

In fact,90% of my editing is made in the Camera view.

Thanks Paul, that shift select was exactly what I needed. Your site is very informative, btw, it has helped me a lot.

Actarusprocyon: I keep my image planes far away and locked, but I’m not sure what you mean by the “V” thing. I try to work in perspective as much as I can. What I did was just set up a minimal character (I think it was <200 faces) with the image planes and ortho, now I’m working only in perspective without drastically altering the proportions.
