Seeking 2D Artist for Original Game: Hero of Allacrost

I am working on a 2D role playing game (RPG) for PC, and I’m searching for a good 2D artist to help out with the project. I’ve posted some information about the project, the team, and the description of what needs to be done below. If you might be interested in joining, please drop me a line at jobs{AT}allacrost{DOT}org. Thank you for reading

Hero of Allacrost ( is a single-player, 2D RPG started by Tyler Olsen (a.k.a. “Roots”). The game is modeled after SNES-era RPGs like Final Fantasy VI and Chrono Trigger, but we have implemented our own flair of modern features and graphics. We are a well-established project and have been around for over 18 months now.

Personally I have been working with this team for the last 6 months as a programmer, and it’s been a blast so far. Here is a list of reasons why I think this project stands out… I tend to ramble, so I’ve tried to keep this as short as possible

Story-centric approach
HoA actually started out as a story, not a game. Our leader, Roots, writes each chapter as if it were a novel. This really adds to the richness of the story and the characters.

Unique battle system
The battles are largely based on the Final Fantasy series, but we are adding a lot of our own ideas. For example, MAPS (multiple attack point system), changes to the GUI, more focus on strategy and actually thinking rather than mashing the attack button, etc.

Everyone has creative input
Roots is very open and encourages everyone to get involved in the forums. You often see programmers talking about art, artists talking about music, composers talking about design… It makes for a great atmosphere, and ultimately I think, a better game.

Target Aim:
Allacrost is cross-platform and will be available on all flavors of Linux, BSD, Windows, Mac OSX, and whatever else we can compile it on. It is also designed to support multiple languages, from English to Portugese to Japanese. Additionally, the game is not-for-profit and open-source, licensed under the GPL. We are aiming for as broad of a target audience as possible, and hope that people from all walks can enjoy this game.

Because we will not collect any revenue for this game, we cannot offer you financial compensation. However, all of the current staff are quite content with putting forth their efforts into what we believe will someday be a great game to share.

About the Team
Our current staff count, although some are currently on hiatus

> Programmers: 6
> Artists: 6
> Composers: 2
> Web Designer: 1

Communication and feedback are a big thing on our team and everyone is encouraged to comment on any work or ideas that are shared. We are very flexible with our work schedules and loads. All that we ask for is for people to give up what time that they can afford to. If a staff member becomes disinterested in what they are currently doing, we’re willing to assign them something new that they wish to work on.

Unfortunately, some of our artists have been swamped with outside committments like school and work, so we are looking to expand our team. I won’t lie- we are hurting for artwork, so I’d ask anyone interested to apply.

Current State of the Game
The game is currently playable, but you can’t do much yet. However, we have made a lot of progress on the engine- i.e. all the low-level parts of the game that make up the foundation of the game. Now, finally we are at a point where we can focus on creating the gameplay itself, and a big part of the challenge from this point on is going to be developing new content, hence the need for artists

Description of Art Needed
Here is a list of the specific areas of artwork that we need help with:

> Map tiles (32x32 pixels)
> Map sprites and animations (32x64 pixels) and other map objects (trees, creatures, etc)
> Character battle sprites and animations (64x128 pixels)
> Enemy battle sprites (64x64 pixels and up)
> Other battle art like visual effects (fire, etc)
> Icons and miscellaneous GUI-related art

We maintain a high level of quality for our artwork and you can expect that each piece of art you create will be reviewed by the other artists and the rest of the team. Typically the third draft or so becomes the final, approved version.

You can use whichever paint program you like. The only restriction is that images must be in PNG format. We do not use palettes, so you can use any colors you like.

For the most part, almost all of the artwork that needs to be done is pixel art. However, if you aren’t experienced with pixel art, but you are a strong artist overall, we would still like to hear from you. One person on our team struggled with stick figures when he started out, but he’s learned a lot and worked at it, and now his work is truly amazing in my opinion.
