Secret Agent Entry: Tim Winkelman
This is my first competition here. I have thought about this, and I have the idea in my head. I should be able to start sketching over this holiday weekend. My picture will be The Spy with the Golden Pants. Our hero is a spy wearing bright gold pants. I am going to try to have the pants be the main light source as they reflect the light from a spotlight. This will give it a cool horror movie lighting effect that should be fun. Our hero will be posing with two guns and two ladies because he is twice the man that you are.
In the background will be a logo on the wall with a dragon holding a hammer and sickle in front of a star. In our story, the Russian Mafia and the Chinese Mafia have teamed up to form a secret evil organization. One of the ladies will be Russian and the other one is Chinese. They both have weapons hidden behind their backs because they are dangerous.
I am going to do this comic book style. I plan to draw the ink lines in Manga Studio and color it in Photoshop. I want it to look like a comic book or a paperback novel. I will probably do a version with the title at the top, but I am not sure if I will have the words on my final entry.
Here is a sketch of my concept. I think that some things are not working and I will need to do some more sketches.
I did this in Painter and then took it into Photoshop for some lens flare.
This turned out too busy and cluttered. I think that two guns and two ladies turned out to be more than I can handle. If I stay with this idea, I will have to cut it down to one of each. I am also thinking I should change the setting to the seventies disco era. Our hero needs an afro and maybe a porn star mustache.
The background is not working for me. A flat wall is just not exciting enough. The logo and my original storyline probably need to go too.
Next up is some more concept sketches in grayscale to find a better composition.
I am going back to working out a composition. I found a photo ref I like for the main character. It is on page 83 of Buddy Scalera’s Men and Boys book from his Comic Artist’s Photo Reference series published by Impact. I am going to use this sketch to build a composition for the painting. I also found a few female photo references that will probably work for me in the Women and Girls book.
I am trying this disco thing here. The story is changing a liitle bit. I think that the only place our hero can wear his shiny gold pants is in the most dangerous disco in Europe.
I am doing this in Painter with some final image processing in Photoshop. I know that most of you guys probably don’t think that lens flares are cool anymore, but this image really needs them. I might also give it some film grain. I gave up on my idea to do comic book ink lines pretty early because this really needs to look more like a book cover illustration or a film.
In this one, our hero is trying to boogie down with the twins when one of them gets shot. This image is probably not exciting enough for the final painting.
In this one, our hero discovers the enemy agent. I like this better and might end up painting it. I am going to do a few more sketches first because I think maybe we need some robots on the dance floor.
Some internet “research” on gogo dancers. I am not sure about copyright issues, but everyone else here seems to be posting stuff they found on web sites.
I was trying to get some images that showed the cages. It looks like not too many people are dancing in a cage anymore. That’s too bad.
Here is another composition sketch where our hero is fighting giant robots with swords. I think this composition could work, but the story doesn’t make any sense and this robots are too big for a normal dance club. I am not sure what I would do with the background.
In the interest of time, I think I need to pick an idea and go with it. It looks like the plan right now is to work on the one with the gogo dancer and get it more fully developed.
Here is my first work in progress. This is the composition I will be going with. I have done some development of the female figure and some rescaling to fix problems with proportions and the size of the two figures in relation to each other. The round platform is being replaced with a square one and the cage will be replaced with a railing at mid thigh height.
