Secret Agent Entry: Jared Simeth

I know damn, that’s crazy! FX are looking pretty good too! You got Luma guys helping you or are you solo? Chad helped explain linear workflow in MR to me over the phone. You project is coming together… next time we’ll have to just join forces!

#22

Looking good! I like the distortion stuff at the end.

For the actual dialogue - feels like some garbled radio chatter could be cool… I’m thinking half-life 2 type stuff

#23

Staszek. Thanks. For the explosions It’s a combo of various live action elements and fluidfx. I used roto’s and and hand painted depth passes for the live action stuff, and painted masks and paint effects holdout for the cg. There is still a bunch of roto I could do but that will have to be a last second thing if at all. As there are much more important shots that are nowhere yet.

destruct007. Solo for this one. This is my first time doing one of these and wasn’t sure if I wanted to get a bunch of people involved in something if I wasn’t that certain about. Yeah I definitely would like to do a team project next time.

mikebot. Thanks, Yeah radio noise/chatter would definitely help. It’s something I want to do but am not too sure of the best way to do it. I need to find some radio noise sound fx and what not I guess. But yeah definitely going to try for that in final.

Hey, This looks pretty cool. Forest is a difficult place for an explosion.
Explosion will not only be smoke and fire, but it would rip a massive hole in the ground.
If you add more debrie and ground flying around it should look more realistic.

#25

pierzak. Thanks for your comments. True, that is something I would like to add but I don’t know if I’ll have time, if I get back to this shot I’ll try adding some dirt/grass that gets kicked up by first major explosion.

#26

Looks nice!

I think you could bloom the light out on the explosions at the end some more though. It would help to integrate them into the scene. Ideally you’d want some influence on the lighting of the trees around the explosions, but I realize that probably wasn’t feasible to simulate on set and it would be a nightmare to try and do it properly in post with all of those leaves to deal with.

#27

ivanisavich. Thanks. yeah there is a fine line between integration and cheesy light wrapping with these kind things. But I agree that it could be pushed a little more. As for the interactive lighting, absolutely correct. One of those things I’d love to add but probably won’t have time for, figured I’d do without it since it’s bright out and all.
How’s New Zealand and MAKE? Been awhile since we were both in Minneapolis.

#28

Ah they’re pretty good man…only a few months left till I graduate, and MAKE’s got some cool projects coming out soon

#29

Wow, crazy times. Finished the trailer, have the making of pretty much in place. Now I just need to lock the edit and see if I can’t get a few finishing touches on some shots.
I faintly remember what sleep is.

What time zone is the deadline for?

#30

I think it might be uk time because as far as I can tell the website operates in that time. Not sure though.

#31

Yay! 3 more days. That is really going to be helpful. That means I can sleep tonight!

#32

Software: Maya,mental ray,Photoshop

So here’s the final 30sec trailer. Making of and Full Edit will be rolling out over the next couple days (obviously).

…Back to work!

Hay. I like that you changed timing. Faster and shorter shots are much better than long and slow. One thing about the last shot. That plane looks as if it was going 30 km/h … very slow. I could imageine it flying throught those clouds crazy fast.
Well done.

#34

It’s nice to watch how much progress have you made with this shots since the begining of this challenge. And I’m curious how it’s all gonna look finished. Editing is much much better now.

I actually think the speed for the clouded shot is pretty good, maybe a little faster couldn’t hurt. The shot that really needs the plane speed higher is when it flies over the trees, it is going far to slow for how close it looks.

Hope that helps, good luck.

#36

Thanks.
pierzak. Yeah I had that in mind when working on that last shot, however I liked the feel of it. The reason it appears to be moving slow is that it is flying with the clouds, which are moving pretty fast. (That’s my story and i’m sticking to it.) In reality I think the plane would be smaller in comparison to the clouds as well, but I like it this way better.

#37

Nice!! the trailer has a good pace to it, and I like the audio.

2 thoughts:

  • Have you tried speeding up the explosion clip? Or doing that thing where the run is really fast, then slow explosion? I dunno, it feels like it needs to be punchier, since everything builds to it.

  • last shot (the bomber in clouds) is begging for some sort of visual distortion effect… similar to the one you had on your post awhile ago, on the very last shot, where the 2 guys were walking towards the camera in the dark.

mikebot. Good notes on both points. I’m focused on full edit right now but those are both things that could be done rather quickly so will probably be able to do those too.
Thanks for the suggestions.

#39

Bryan. Thanks for your input. I don’t know, speed seems pretty reasonable to me. Looking at footage of flyovers it seems to match up pretty well. It wouldn’t be flying at full speed that low while dropping it’s cargo.

#40

Ya, you’re right. I watched it again and calculated the speed out to about 200mph, lower end of spectrum for new bombers in carpet runs but still well within norm. Love to see making of.
