Sculpting the Head

#1

This is something I struggle with hugely. The flexibility of being able to sculpt and design the head from a simple cube in Zbrush/Mudbox and then re-topo is something I’d love to achieve.

Aside from the obvious (practice, practice, practice), are there any good resources out there which would help? I’m thinking traditional sculpting books or DVD’s. The book by Phillipe Fareut looks decent. Not anatomy books which I’ve got dozens off but the actual techniques and guides to follow/learn etc.

One of the absolute best sculpting books out there is Modelling and Sculpting the Human Figure by Edouard Lanteri. He was a 19thC sculptor and instructor at the Royal College of Art. There are 2 of his books out there, both published by Dover. The first is the human figure, the second goes into animal sculpting. They are very thorough and my copies have seen so much use I’m going to have to buy a new copy soon.

yep that book is great, but if you wanna achieve that, the way to do it is mainly practice i guess…atm i’m doing something with a friend, just “quick” head sketches in zb starting from a box, the idea was to spend a month or two doing them and end up with a bunch of them just for the sake of practice and learning, so you could try to do something like that…we could post them once we are done and see how it went!

Hey Paul, I’m struggling to learn how to model a head period. My stuff looks like squash. If I could get it to look like your mesh in your avatar, I’ll be happy. I need to get down and practice. That’s all I can hope for.

I find drawing really helpful. First learn how to master paper, don’t be intimidated by it
Even if the drawings are bad it doesn’t matter, you learn the proportions etc and that is vital.

PS sorry no examples in my portfolio but will put some un soon
have a look at my rickshaw though if you like

Well I do know how to draw (I’m making a switch from Illustration to Animation) I think I just suffer from a lack of experience with 3D software. But I think that drawing always helps :).

Thank you for the link. Very nice work :buttrock:
