Take a look at the REYES algorithm, implemented first in Pixar Renderman. Guess the first chapters of the book “Advanced RenderMan: Creating CGI for Motion Pictures by Anthony A. Apodaca, Larry Gritz” is available as PDF in some of the Siggraph Renderman Courses, can be found at, http://www.renderman.org/RMR/Books/index.html#Sig. Check it, Im not 100% sure but I think the REYES architecture is described there.

If you want a little bit more of “in-depth” information such as code you should check some of the opensource REYES implementations, for example Aqsis.

“Physically Based Rendering”, earlier discussed on the list is also a great resource for people who wants to get into the world of renderers.
