Robotech: Southern Cross Logan CGI model

#1

I’ve been a Robotech fan since 1987 when I first saw it.
I’ve been a Lighwave3D fan since the days of the Amiga.
Well I’ve put the two together and this is one of the out comes.
It’s a work in progress and I’m currently working on the texture(s) for it.

#2

Any pictures of the original design to compare it?

#3

Overall the shape and structure of the character seems correct from what I remember form robotech. The biggest suggestion I would make would be to add some more details to the model. Gears and pistons and screws, a cockpit and little things like that would add a lot to this model. Keep up the good work.

#4

ok, here is the a comparison pic

I’m currently working on the texture map for the Logan.
At this point I’m making the panels/seem that make up the shell.
when time allows, i’ll try to put up a pic of the tail section as an example.

Please, keep the comments coming. With out them one never learns of one’s weekness.

Oh so there you are Daid! lol

#5

Looking good buddy…
love robotech, one of the best cartoons ever!

hope to see more

cheers

#6

If you make stand one next to the other, the Logan has some strong similarities with the Cóndor, another mecha also seen in Robotech. I think this could be a good texture and/or position for making a render of your model since they are similar

#7

Ok, i’ve done some work on the texture, but I’d love some suggestions.
My modeling skill is alot more then my texture skill. Not saying much huh? lol

#8

Ok I’ve braved the crazy world of virus filled internet because I heard about this mecha!!

Very kewl work.

The model from what I can see looks good (dawm near perfect)!

The only thing I can think of as per model work is maybe round out her outer shin maybe …the orange part.

Now comes the fun stuff …“texturing”, and lighting in a nice action scene. becuase you are working with what is essentially a plane I would say to go for as much matt or non-reflective surface color as you can but then that would effect the mech maybe negatively…decisions -decisions.

It's all just opinion anyway and you are the artist so go with what you feel works for the expression ...no doubt it will kick azz just the same given this nice start.

Duma - thanks for the vote of confidence man!

Yea, i’m working on the texture i’d like, though i’m always open to sugestions.
I agree with the flat paint scheme as that is what a military plain would have.
I’ve been holding off on pose’s and stuff as i’m not really upto speed animating yet.
Friend of mine showed me how to use the pivot points in Lightwave modeler. I just haven’t set up the rigging for it yet. Still fine tuning the mesh as I do my texture work.

Time allowing I’ll have some thing new to post here soon!

Crap I just realized who you are! DUDE I love your cyclone models! Your VR-038L makes my want to go out an buy a cycle! Your detial level is very impressive!

#10

Well here is quick peek at what i’ve been up too.

#11

Hmmm it’s coming along nicely.

I like the color choice. Do you intend on making it’s color setup the same as the one in the refference?

I'm not to familiar with lightwave so I'm looking forward to seeing what you will do with the texture. I was talking with a buddy about this and he was also pretty impressed with the transform as it seems you have clean and simple.

Also …just wondering …will you be animating this becuase I think It would look pretty good if you had it just T-form land on a runway or road maybe!

#12

Hey thank duma!
Well as for the color scheme I’d like to use the yellow orange of the anime, but with the paint scratched and chipped away in areas. Like the unit has been in service for awail, kinda like battle scars.

I’d like to do a quick animation of the Logan flying along a grid pathway, similar to a part of the intro sequence of robotech. Though in the sequence it’s is motocycles moving along the grid path. Have the Logan flying along the patch, T-form and blast the camera. figured that would look cool.

#13

Have you thought in making the inside of the cabin transparent to see the controls and that stuff?

Hey Duma, when are you going to open a topic for your Robotech models too?

#14

Daidalus - Thats not a bad idea!

I think i’ll hold off on it for right now though. I’m converting the black lines I added fro reference to some thing else. Plus a refinement to the cocktpit, yet agian. lol

Figure once I’ve finished my texture and ran an animation, i’ll go back and do the cockpit controls, and pilot.

OH, hey Duma, daid is right! When are you going to post your stuff here?

#15

looking good, a little worn n dusty texture would be perfect…

#16

I agree with Eternal10k …the worn look is interesting. I would only say make two with one being newlike and the other battle hardened.

Hey Daidalus!

I’m realy freaked about posting as there are so many awesome artists out here. I mean Brian is having fun here and this mecha looks on the azz-kick path.

If I do it, it won’t be for a little while maybe when I have cleaned up some of my stuff. I just recently saw some of my older images on someone elses computer and it’s so dark it’s hard to see. So i’m re-rendering alot of stuff so everyone can make sense of it.

Brian i’m realy looking forward to this animation.

#17

Man it looks cool…

the only suggestion I have is to make a bit of a bevel around where the Canopy meets the Cockpit… so you can catch a bit of reflection there…

As far as texturing I recomend this site…

http://leigh.cgcommunity.com/

bucket loads of Lightwave Texturing Info there…

:bounce: can’t wait to see this one to completion…

#18

Very good! COOL!

#19

Hey Brian, are you going to post your Veritech Hovertank WIP here too?

#20

Hey Brian,

Nice model! love the clean sharp lines. when are you going to complete the animation? my friends & i can hardly wait to see it!
