Rigging Machinery

Hi guys and gals,

I could do with some advice if possible. Not sure if this is the correct area but here I go…

I am trying to rig a stage light (mac light) which looks similar to this:

I want a target spotlight inside it and I want my geometry to move in respect to the target on the spotlight.

So far I have tried HD IK with no bones and a boned system too.

Neither of these seem to produce what i want hence I am here asking advice.

A quick explanation of what I am aiming for:

In my day job I create visualisations of stage shows. It would save me a lot of time when positioning these stage lights if I could simply place the target and have the base of the light swivel and rotate to point at the target of said spot light (which will have volume added later). Therefore the lighting and geometry are both pointing at the same thing on stage.

So my question is…

What is the best method to rig this up?

Thanks in advance

It should be possible to do this with either a simple IK chain with some limits on which axis it can rotate on or even by using aim constraints

that’s just two lookats. One for the rotating pivot, where “look at” is horizontal rotation axis, and “up object” is the direction where the light is hitting. Another lookat is for a lamp, where “look at” is direction of lamp, and “up axis” is the axis the lamp is turning on.
